Wanted: Leadership in BC's Forests
Dear Paov,
The growing scarcity of old-growth forests on Vancouver Island concerns me.
After you read our latest educational report, Vancouver Island’s Last Stand, you’ll see why.
We co-produced this newsletter with our friends at Sierra Club BC to highlight the crisis in Vancouver Island’s forests and how we can better manage and protect these incredible ecosystems. In it, we outline the ecological impacts of this crisis, including the status of the coastal forest industry – which is struggling after decades of over harvest and job-killing raw log export policies.
We also emphasize that – for too long – the BC government has ignored this problem.
It's time for the BC government to come to the table and address issues like the link between coastal rainforests and climate change.
It's time to give First Nations and small communities more control over decision-making when it comes to forests, and ensure environmental well-being is a top priority in forest management.
And it's time for the BC Premier to ban old-growth logging on Vancouver Island.
