The campaigns you support are ramping up this spring, and the RAVEN team is gathering force to meet the legal defence costs of the Indigenous Peoples on the key legal battlefronts in Canada.
RAVEN’s campaigns are strategic game-changing legal challenges. At a time when environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks have been gutted and not yet rebuilt, we are supporting work to conduct baseline studies, gather critical evidence of environmental threats, and preserve precious cultural knowledge. Legal challenges take years: we're in it for the long game to achieve lasting victories that set powerful precedents in Canadian courts. RAVEN stands shoulder to shoulder with Indigenous Peoples, offering sustainable long-term funding to give them a fighting chance in court.
Here are a couple of examples of RAVEN’s current campaigns:
The Beaver Lake Cree Nation is drawing a line in the tar sands. The nation is suing Canada and Alberta to stop the over-development of tar sands industries in their homeland. RAVEN donors are helping this small Cree community prepare for what could potentially be the biggest court battle in Canada’s history: Beaver Lake Cree Nation versus the unmitigated expansion of the Alberta tar sands.
The Luutkudziiwus House of the Gitxsan Nation are in Madii Lii camp, drawing the line against an LNG pipeline that would transport fracked gas through the pristine salmon habitats along the Skeena River that have sustained indigenous families for millennia. Their fight is the fight of all of us who want to see climate justice and a liveable future for all.
Last year RAVEN donors gave generously to campaigns like Pull Together and Join the Circle—Stop the Site-C Dam. Thank you so much for supporting those programs.
RAVEN cannot continue its great work in supporting these critical cases without investing in our core operations. Today, we are asking you to support RAVEN’s sustainability. Your investment in RAVEN makes it possible for our top-notch fundraising team to respond to the urgent calls of Indigenous Peoples in Canada who are committed to defending the integrity of their traditional lands, culture and livelihoods.
RAVEN is the ONLY charitable organization in Canada that provides legal defence funds for First Nations. We operate with a minimal staff team and keep administrative allocations below 15% so that more funds raised go directly to the legal costs of the nations. We can only do this if a core group of donors are willing to support our real costs, which are frugal.
