Reminder: Support strong laws for fish

From coast-to-coast Canadians value fish. And now is a critical moment in history to vastly improve legal protections for fish and fish habitat - to give fish a fighting chance as the habitat they need faces a myriad of threats.
Will you give $5 a month to protect fish?
As you may recall, back in 2012 the Fisheries Act, one... of Canada's oldest and - until then - strongest environmental laws, was gutted. Protection for fish habitat was weakened to pave the way for big oil and resource development projects, resulting in many fish species losing legal protection from the harmful effects of habitat destruction.
But the science and Indigenous knowledge are clear: fish need habitat to survive and flourish.
And that's not all - there are many more weaknesses in the Fisheries Act that leave Canada's fish populations vulnerable - including huge gaps when it comes to the effects of climate change, the cumulative impact of disruption from multiple industry projects and protection for species at risk.
Now is the time to restore environmental protection for fish habitat and create stronger laws to protect fish.
Together, we spoke up about the harm caused by weak laws and helped create space for positive change with a new federal government committed to strong environmental laws as part of its election promises. And now, West Coast has a critical and rare opportunity to play an important role in the creation of stronger, lasting legal protection for fish and fish habitat.
We are already shaping the law reform solutions that will get Canada back on track, and restoring lost protections for fish habitat in the Fisheries Act is just the beginning of a new opportunity to strengthen Canada's environmental laws.
