Release of "Laughing Allowed! – A How-to Guide for Making a Physical Comedy Show to Build Neighbourhood Resilience"

It's finally here! In the fall of 2014, a group of people in Victoria, Canada who shared both an interest in their neighbourhood and a quirky sense of humour were brought together to explore a question: Could they turn their experiences of the ups and downs of neighbourhood leadership, activism and volunteering into physical comedy sketches? Project participants were trained in theatre and physical comedy techniques over six weeks and collaboratively developed a show called Laughing Allowed! The Slapstick World of Neighbourhood Activism. Click here to watch the show. And click here to download and print our newly released, complete do-it-yourself guide to developing your own show using physical comedy as a way to build neighbourhood resilience.

Laughing Allowed! was a project involving Transition Victoria as part of the Building Resilient Neighbourhoods project.

City of Victoria's My Great Neighbourhood Grant

Love your neighbourhood? Ever thought about how great it would be to have a community tool shed, parklet or community mural on your street? Apply for a My Great Neighbourhood Grant and put up to $5,000 to work for your community!

The My Great Neighbourhood Fund supports citizen-initiated projects that leave a positive physical legacy in public spaces. Up to $5,000 is available for eligible applications which include, but is not limited to, not-for-profit organizations, schools and community centres. The City will fund up to $5,000 to match the equivalent contribution the neighbourhood makes. The matching contribution can be a combination of volunteer labour, donated services, donated materials and other funds raised. Great Neighbourhood projects are intended to animate under-utilized community spaces and should be initiated by local residents to create gathering spots that bring people together.

If you’re a resident of Victoria, YOU can apply for funding by partnering with a local not-for-profit group! Please read our grant guidelines to review all of the eligibility criteria, and apply by midnight on July 24, 2016. Click here to learn more.
