Join us, our friends and community partners in celebrating World Refugee Day!


These events are taking place on the unceded territory of Coast and Straits Salish peoples. We remember the history of displacement and violence on this land as we welcome newcomers that are fleeing violence from their home countries. HOT OFF THE PRESS! We are pleased to welcome multi-award winning poet, Ahmed Knowmadic to celebrate World Refugee Day events with us. Full details below!


1) 19 Days & Everybody's Children Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Moderated by former long-time CBC radio host Jo-Ann Roberts

2) World Refugee Day Celebration
Saturday, June 18, 2016 11am-2pm

Greater Victoria Public Library Central Branch courtyard (entrance on Broughton Street), This year’s event, with the theme Building Community, Breaking down Barriers, marks the 4th annual World Refugee Day celebrations in Victoria. This family-friendly celebration will feature live music, interactive activities, community info tables, a children's artist, and a "living library" with people who will speak about refugee experiences.

3) Halibut Iftar and Spoken Word Poetry with Ahmed Knowmadic
Saturday, June 18, 2016, 8:30pm - 10pm
Location:
Bayhanian Community Centre, 1709 Blanchard Street

VCST is co-sponsoring the evening of poetry and a community meal with the Support Network for Indigenous Women and Women of Colour (SNIWWOC). Iftar is the meal eaten after sunset during the month of Ramadan. Multi-award winning poet Ahmed Knowmadic along with local youth poet laureate of Victoria Ann-Bernice Thomas will light up the stage before and during the meal.

4) Youth Poetry Workshop with Ahmed Knowmadic!
