Campaign Victory!
by Eric Nordal

We're excited to announce that this week, we finally got the wages that've been owed to our barista friend that was getting paid below minimum wage and fired without cause! The campaign began in January, and we went through a lot to finally get here. We have so much appreciation for the workers and the community that stood with us to make this a big victory. Read more about how it all went down here.

Retail Action Members

July 13th - Celebrate our victory with us at the next Working Class Wednesday! Invite your friends and coworkers: eat some delicious dinner, enjoy live entertainment, and hear some of the stories from the Wild Coffee campaign. RSVP and spread the word.

Meeting the Ministry
written by RAN

On June 14th organisers of the Retail Action Network met with the BC Ministry responsible for making changes to the Employment Standards Act. This meeting was brought together by the Employment Standards Coalition which is made up of a broad range of organisations that are fighting for justice with those that are most at risk of being exploited in the workplace: migrant workers, domestic workers, working children and youth, non-unionized workers, and of course, retail, food service, and hospitality workers. More details can be read here.

MayWorks 2016

MayWorks 2016 marked the first annual celebration in Victoria of culture, community, and arts, through the lens of working class struggle.

Let Us Know!

What would you like to see as the main form of entertainment at the upcoming Working Class Wednesdays?

  • live music (with space to dance)
  • a movie screening (after dinner, and with a discussion once it ends)
  • trivia quiz (similar to our past events with Paul & Paul)
  • variety show (i.e., a combination of all sorts of acts in smaller bursts)
  • improv (similar to our past events with the Whistling Kettle)
  • a play (anywhere from a simple reading to a full production)
  • other (comment or direct message us with your ideas)

Working Class Wednesday is ever-changing with each month. It is meant to be an event for strengthening community, one which establishes an environment that combines relaxation after a hard day of work, entertainment to spread joy after dealing with bad bosses and cruel customers, and discussion on topics that relate to workers' well-being and organising to make both Victoria and the world at large a more just place. To create this we must listen to what the diverse workers of the community themselves want from such an event, so please share your opinions and ideas, and together we can build a long lasting space for all.
