Dear Paov,This week is a week for celebration.
As of last Thursday, Enbridge no longer has federal approval for its proposed Northern Gateway pipelines and tankers project.
Ruling on a series of legal challenges launched by First Nations, environmental organizations and Canada's largest private sector union, the Federal Court of Appeal overturned the federal approval of Northern Gateway and sent the issue back to Cabinet for redetermination.
The Court held that Canada "offered only a brief, hurried and inadequate opportunity" for consultation with First Nations before the federal Cabinet approved the project, which... "left entire subjects of central interest to the affected First Nations, sometimes subjects affecting their subsistence and well-being, entirely ignored."
This is a major legal victory - not only for First Nations but for the environment and the many communities and individuals who have fought against Enbridge's project over the years.
