Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East

Dear Victoria,

Please act – just 30 seconds

Green Party leader Elizabeth May is backtracking on some key party resolutions relating to Israel-Palestine. Show her and her party that the resolutions... for Palestinian human rights are good policy.

The Green Party has come under attack by the pro-Occupation lobby in Canada regarding two resolutions to be debated in the Party’s August convention. The two resolutions reflect support for Palestinian human rights, and should be accepted. Nevertheless, Green Party leader Elizabeth May has been waffling indecisively, and has even spoken against these resolutions.

More Info

The Green Party has several resolutions possibly headed to its convention in August. One resolution calls for the Green party to support the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement targeting Israel until Israel bans “settlement” construction and enters into good faith negotiations with the Palestinians. This resolution is very well-reasoned, and cites international law and previous precedent in calling for support for BDS.

The second resolution for which the Green Party has come under attack has to do with a Canadian affiliate with an organization which discriminates against Palestinians. This resolution asks the Green Party of Canada to call for “the Canada Revenue Agency to revoke the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund [JNF] for contravening public policy against discrimination and for its failure to comply with international human rights law.” The resolution cites Israel’s own Attorney General who charged the JNF with practicing institutional discrimination against non-Jewish citizens of Israel.

Elizabeth May has been known to waffle on issues relating to Israel-Palestine, and has begun to do so regarding these issues. She issued a letter last week distancing herself from both resolutions, and stating that she disagreed with a resolution which actually has her name on it. She has also invited the CEO of the JNF Canada to speak to the convention floor in August.

Officially, the Green Party has some good party policy on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Nevertheless, Elizabeth May has not always been good about publicly representing party policy on issues. Also, the Middle East and Israel-Palestine is not May’s area of strength. By demonstrating Canadian support for these resolutions, we show May that these resolutions are good policy.
