A huge blow to Enbridge and Kinder Morgan

Last week, two pivotal announcements were made regarding the Enbridge Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipelines that we’d like to share with you.

Update on Enbridge - Huge Victory for First Nations!

On Thursday, the Federal Court of Appeals overturned Harper’s approval of the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline, citing the lack of First Nations consultation.1 This is a huge victory for the climate, for the communities along the pipeline and tanker route, and especially for First Nations asserting their constitutional rights. While this is not game over for Enbridge, it’s a major setback for this dangerous project.2

We’d like to give a huge thanks and congratulations to the Gitxaala, Gitga’at, Haisla, Haida, Kitasoo, Heiltsuk nations and the Nadleh Whut’en and Nak’azdli Whut’en bands, who together launched the court challenge that led to this decision. We’d also like to thank the hundreds of Leadnow community members who contributed close to $9,000 to this legal action!3

This is an example of how, if we work together with our allies across Canada, we can defeat even the most powerful corporations in the world.

Stopping Kinder Morgan - Consultations begin this summer!

Also on Thursday, the government review panel studying the Kinder Morgan pipeline released the schedule of public meetings to consult communities along the pipeline route. Throughout July and August, there will be 18 public meetings in 10 cities along the pipeline route - but none along the tanker route or the rest of Canada.4

We know this pipeline will be built, unless we make it clear there’s no social license for this project. These public meetings are a chance for communities along the pipeline route to show their overwhelming opposition.

But the reality is that this project will also endanger coastal communities along the tanker route, and will be a massive source of global warming emissions, affecting us all. That’s why it’s crucial we show the massive opposition to Kinder Morgan across the country and not just in BC.

Sign Petition Today

To date, close to 25,000 people have signed this petition, and it’s crucial we get as many signatures a we can before we deliver it to the Kinder Morgan review panel in August.

These two announcements are the culmination of years of organizing and mobilizing by communities along the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipeline routes, as well as people across Canada. While we’ve come a long way since the Harper decade, we can’t let up the fight now.

These fights represent a bigger struggle for Canada’s future. If we build new pipelines, Canada is saying climate change is not important, and our children will have to pay the consequences of our inaction on climate. On the other hand, if we stop these pipelines, we can build a new economy that respects the limits of our atmosphere, respects First Nations rights and title, and creates clean, safe and rewarding jobs for everyone.

Thanks for all that you do.

With hope and respect,
