Dear Friends of SJS,
Tonight: Candlelight Vigil (Wed Aug 31, 7:30pm, Centennial Square) Overdose Awareness Day
Please join us on Wednesday, August 31st, 7:30pm at Centennial Square to commemorate the lives we have lost to preventable overdose deaths.
International Overdose Awareness Day aims to raise awareness that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable. It will also mark 139 days since the Province of British Columbia declared a public health emergency over the rate of overdose in BC. The most recent Coroner's report (August 10th, 2016) states that approximately 200 people have died from overdose since the announcement of the public health emergency.
All are welcome to attend.
Food and juice will be available free of charge. Candles will be provided.
Following a moment of silence, speakers will include Leslie Mcbain (MomsStopTheHarm), Katie Lacroix (Chair of the Board of the SOLID Society of Living Illicit... Drug Users), Bernice M Kamano (Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness) and Peer Advisory Committee Members from Yes2SCS.
Please spread the word.

The Anti-violence Project is looking for volunteers (see attached poster):
the anti violence project is looking for enthusiastic and caring folks of all genders and backgrounds to participate in our 5 week intensive volunteer training program. training will include discussions on systemic violence, supporting survivors, sex positivity, and creative resistance.
volunteers are an essential part of our organization! due to limited staff hours, we often rely on the creativity and capacity of volunteers to help run programming, facilitate workshops, and run drop in support hours. There are many benefits to volunteering, including gaining skills to support and empower survivors, joining a team of people to create change, and gaining/utilizing knowledge on gender-based violence.
we encourage people of all genders and abilities to apply. our volunteer training is open to students and community members; you do not have to be a UVic student to apply for our training.
training will be held in October every tuesday evening, three saturdays, and some thursday evenings. check out our website for more specific dates and details!
applications can be found at http://www.antiviolenceproject.org/volunteers/
please submit applications by september 19th to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. !

Please check out some of the great events and calls for support from our community:
Protect the Peace Valley Campaign
Our people, Prophet River and West Moberly First Nations, have been fighting the Site C hydroelectric dam project (“the project”) for close to five decades.
The project threatens to flood three of the largest rivers in our territory: Peace, Moberly, and Halfway Rivers. Over 107 kilometers of river valleys and their tributaries could be under water, including ancient burial sites.
On September 12, 2016, we will be in Montreal in the federal court of appeal to challenge Canada’s project approval. Our community members will be embarking on a road tour across Canada to magnify the gross injustices of this project and to amplify public support for the protection of the Peace River Valley. We, along with the full support of the First Nations Leadership Council, are urgently requesting your involvement in this very significant and historic journey.
The implications of the court’s decision are far reaching, especially for other Treaty First Nations. The arguments specifically ask if Canada is justified in approving projects, without undertaking their own analysis and determination on infringement of Treaty. Additionally, many characterize the Site C Dam as a litmus test of the commitments made by Canada to have a renewed, nation-to-nation relationship with First Nations; a respectful relationship that honours Treaties and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Below is a list of the Treaty 8 Justice for the Peace Caravan’s needs:
- Offer to host or help with a solidarity event along the journey’s earmarked stops -- Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, and Montreal
- Build awareness and excitement about the tour through your networks and social media
- Coordinate local drummers to welcome and/or send-off the bus
- Create welcome banners and signs to rally around the bus when it arrives
- Provide meals and billeting for bus participants
- Engage your local politicians and media to attend the solidarity events near you
- Promote and encourage your local networks to attend the solidarity events near you
- Recruit and confirm dignitaries to speak at the solidarity event(s)
- Provide a monetary donation to off-set the costs of the journey
