Have you heard of Petronas?

PM Justin Trudeau could approve the Petronas Pacific NorthWest liquefied fracked gas terminal as early as next week.

Send a message today to call on him to protect the salmon and defend our climate by rejecting this dangerous project.

Would you believe me if I told you the government is about to approve a project that could destroy Canada’s second-largest salmon run?

Our partners in Northern BC are telling us that the federal government is preparing to approve Petronas' Pacific NorthWest liquefied fracked gas terminal, which is set to be built on Lelu Island - Canada’s last intact salmon estuary.1

To make matters worse, this project would become Canada’s single biggest point sources of greenhouse gas emissions, making it impossible for us to meet our international climate commitments.2,3

The good news is we can still stop this project. Close to 2,000 Leadnow community members already sent messages to the government calling on them to stop this project, and they helped delay it -- twice.4

Now we need to increase the pressure on government to kill this project for once and for all. PM Trudeau has repeatedly promised to make evidence-based decisions and listen to our comunities -- now's our chance to hold him to those promises.

It’s hard to believe the government is seriously considering approving this project at the end of the hottest summer in recorded history, a few months after the costliest forest fire in the country’s history and after the smallest salmon run BC has seen in 120 years.5-7

This project, proposed by Malaysia’s state-owned oil company, will increase carbon emissions and pose a direct threat to the habitat of 330 million juvenile salmon every year.8

The Skeena River’s salmon economy provides upwards of $100 million every year to the region and forms the backbone of the local First Nations culture.9

An approval of this project would be an attack to the salmon, our climate and First Nations rights.

Click here to send a message to PM Trudeau and join the thousands of Leadnow community members who’ve already taken action to stop this dangerous project.

This summer, the Leadnow community has partnered with scientists and local communities to protect BC’s wild salmon from open-net fish farms that are spreading disease and virus. Thanks to thousands of you taking action, we’ve even managed to pressure the government to delay a legal appeal that would facilitate the transfer of diseased Atlantic salmon to BC open-net farms.10

If we lose the fight against Petronas, however, our previous victories would pale in comparison to the damage this terminal could cause to salmon runs in the Skeena river.

Take action to stop Petronas from destroying Canada’s 2nd largest salmon run and wrecking Canada’s climate abitions: http://www.leadnow.ca/petronas-vs-salmon/

Thanks for all that you do

With hope and respect,
Rodrigo and Jamie on behalf of the Leadnow team
