Support communities calling for an end to old-growth logging
Dear Paov,
This week is National Forest Week — the perfect time to take action to protect some of the last remaining intact old-growth coastal rainforests in BC.
Much like you, municipal governments know that old-growth logging has no place in our future.
Next week, mayors and councillors from across BC have a chance to have this message endorsed by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) at its annual convention – and they need your help to make that happen.
Earlier this year, councillors from the District of Metchosin on southern Vancouver Island, brought a motion forward calling for the protection of old-growth on Vancouver Island and the South Coast, to the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) annual meeting. The motion passed easily, and was intended as a resolution to the UBCM convention this September 26-30.
However, the UBCM’s resolutions committee deemed that old-growth logging is a regional issue and should be dealt with only by regional bodies like the AVICC.
The endangered old-growth on Vancouver Island and South Coast, is an issue that impacts all of BC, and councillors from Metchosin and other municipalities know it. At the UBCM convention they will fight to have the motion discussed and voted on the convention and they need your support!
Vancouver Island and the South Coast have the biggest and oldest trees in all of Canada.
Read the official motion that they'll be championing on our website.
This is a huge opportunity for municipal leaders to formally stand together and state the simple fact that old-growth logging has no place in healthy communities, and to take that message forward to lawmakers in the provincial government.
That’s why we’ve created a letter tool for you to find contact information for your mayor and councillors and urge them to vote in favour of this motion.
Let’s make sure that this National Forest Week counts – logging in old-growth rainforests needs to stop in BC.
