Make your voice louder than chainsaws!

Dear Paov,

The forests of BC’s Sunshine Coast still have some of the oldest and grandest trees in all of Canada.

Yet due to provincial government policy that allows the logging of old-growth forests, people are too often left to protest logging operations in areas that should already be protected.

Right now, Peninsula Logging is wrecking a forest known by the industry as BC Timber Sales Block A87125. Local people formed a protection camp in the summer and want this endangered forest included in Mount Elphinstone provincial park. Since then, the timber company obtained a court order against the locals and there have been nine arrests.

That's why we need to flood our decision-makers with letters calling for an end to this destruction on Mt Elphinstone.

Naturally, local people want a bigger park - one large enough to sustain the forest ecosystem.

Mt. Elphinstone provincial park is small, protecting only 139 hectares of forest across the lower mountain slopes between Gibsons and Sechelt on southern BC’s Sunshine Coast. BC’s Ministry of Environment confirms local concerns, stating that Mt. Elphinstone Provincial Park is vulnerable “to adjacent logging.” In other words, the existing park needs expansion to provide viable protection of the forest ecosystem – including some trees that are centuries old.

It’s important that our leaders know that we strongly support the expansion of Mount Elphinstone Provincial Park. Please take a moment to write your letter today calling for an immediate and permanent end to the logging on Mt. Elphinstone!
