Speak up for BC’s species at risk
Dear Paov,
Did you know that British Columbia doesn't have an endangered species law?
BC has some of the most amazing wildlife in all of Canada including mountain caribou, spotted owls and grizzly bears but we now have over 1,900 species at risk listed, mostly because of habitat damage and loss.
This is where you come in. Right now we have a wonderful opportunity to stand up for species at risk in BC. Until November 30, the provincial government is asking for your opinion regarding the protection of wild plant and animal species that are in decline. After the close of the public comment period, BC Premier Clark will announce her government’s plan to "protect" species at risk - but astoundingly so far she has refused to consider provincial endangered species legislation – which is exactly what species at risk need in BC.
BC needs an endangered species law now! Please make your opinion known to Premier Clark and her government officials.
Topic 1: Principles for the protection of species at risk
- Allowing BC to take into account socio-economic considerations when planning for species at risk has been a disaster. Industrial interests such as logging and mining are already given far too much power to destroy species’ habitat in the pursuit of short term profit.
- BC needs a strong endangered species law that puts species survival first and foremost, regardless of impacts to corporate profits. Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge should be first and foremost when it comes to protecting species at risk in BC – not corporate profits.
- BC’s protection of species at risk is currently a weak patchwork of regulations that has allowed far too many species to fall through the legislative cracks. The ineffectual BC Wildlife Act is actually derived from hunting legislation.
- BC needs a strong provincial endangered species law that replaces the inadequate system currently in use.
- Species at risk must be protected, whether their habitat is on public or private land.
- BC needs a strong provincial endangered species law that requires endangered species habitat to be protected regardless of land ownership.
- The protection of species at risk should be properly funded by the BC government. Programs should not be reliant on bake sales or handouts from corporate donors as is the case now.
- BC needs a strong provincial endangered species law that is well funded to ensure proper enforcement and monitoring.
BC’s spotted owls, mountain caribou, salish suckers, badgers and many others are counting on you.
