Rally for rental housing
THURSDAY JUNE 22ND

We are experiencing a housing crisis! There is virtually nowhere to rent in Victoria, and rental prices have jumped significantly in the last year. We need solutions now!
One solution that is being considered by Victoria city council on Thursday, June 22: a moratorium on the demolition of affordable rental buildings, pending the development of policies to encourage the retention and... refurbishment of rental apartment buildings, and ensure there is no net loss of affordable units when redevelopment is deemed necessary. The motion also calls for a Standards of Rental Housing Maintenance Bylaw, to address the problem of "demolition by neglect," and also investigation of additional protections for tenants facing "demo-viction" or "reno-viction". The motion is being brought forward by Councillors Madoff, Loveday, and Isitt and needs at least 2 more council votes to pass.
We will gather outside at 5:45pm for a brief rally, then demonstrate our support for this resolution inside the Council Chamber as our City Council meets at 6:30pm.
Please show your support by coming out to the rally or by emailing city councilors to tell them you support this motion.

Commemoration of Air India tragedy
friday june 23 - Vancouver

pinShow MapAir India Memorial Stanley ParkVancouver, British Columbia
On June 23, 1985 Air India Flight 182 was blown mid air above the Irish Sea killing all 329 people aboard making it the worst incident in the history of aviation terrorism before 9/11. 32 years have passed and the victims' families are still waiting for answers. The botched investigation has resulted into only one conviction. It's that time of the year again when we need to come together to show our support and solidarity with the victims' families and reflect on where our political leaders went wrong and how religious fanaticism and bigotry continues to pose threat to the humanity across the world. It seems that neither the issues that led to the tragedy have been honestly addressed nor anything has been learnt from it to make our world better place for everyone. Please come and join us to show your compassion and support and press the authorities for a dignified closure in the lives of the victims' families who are still waiting for justice and raise voice for the victims of terrorism in any other form and anywhere in the world. Please join us in a fun, educational, and true experience of the place that we call home as we travel through W̱SÁNEĆ Territory.
At this gathering, we aim to unsettle our ideas in relation to the places we go, the food we eat, and for some... the holidays we celebrate.
We will be joined by a number of community groups, elders, workers, and activists that will offer insights into their reflections of place, what that means to us, and how we can expand upon our understandings of "home".
This year on July 1st, relocate yourself, and re"discover" your home.
Stop #1
SṈIDȻEȽ (Tod Inlet)
With the support of our community partners, please join us for a light lunch, an opportunity to hear about stories of the W̱SÁNEĆ nation, the people, and the place that we call home.
Participants will have a chance to give back by helping pull invasive plants, and support the restoration project that is happening.
Stop #2
TBD farm location
Participants will enjoy a tour of a local farm, and be invited to join a discussion about the impacts of our global food system and how that directly impacts the lives of farm workers that struggle to navigate new borders and new economic systems.
We will have an opportunity to get our hands dirty and be a farmhand for the afternoon.
Snacks and refreshments will be served.

Victoria Social Justice Coalition Seeking Logo
Jun 19 (3 days ago)

to VICTORIA
Hi Friends,A number of progressive community organizations working for Peace, Justice, Solidarity and a Clean and Healthy Environment has been newly formed in Victoria. The name of our Coalition is "Victoria Social Justice Coalition". We will soon began activities to promote our issues. Our goal is to unite all organizations who are working for social justice and act in unison whenever possible. We feel unity will give us more resources to come up with solutions to the many problems our society is facing and a stronger voice to be able to implement them.
We are now trying to find a logo for our Coalition that we can use for our banners, letter heads, website and the like. If any of us can come up with any ideas, sketches, paintings or drafts for such a logo please send it to us. We are giving ourselves one month time before we choose which one we will use. An announcement will be sent after we pick the one that will most represent the Coalition. We will show the logo we pick and the person who came up with it. A surprise prize will be given to the person who makes the one that is chosen.
Also if you belong to a progressive organization that would be interested in joining our Coalition please let us know and we will send you more information as to when and where we meet and how to join.
In solidarity,
