Dear PAOV,
When MPs return from summer break next week the Conservatives and their new leader Andrew Scheer will be ramping up divisive, fear-mongering attacks on asylum seekers, Omar Khadr and the Liberals’ new tax reform plan.[1]
We’ve seen time after time how the Conservatives will stop at nothing to maximize their political advantage by stoking fears and trying to divide us. But we’re not going to let them win.
Leadnow can play a powerful role in countering the Conservative spin while holding the Liberals accountable for their progressive promises.
We want to cut through the noise send a clear message to the government about what the Leadnow community’s priorities are for the fall - but we need you to weigh in. If 5000 people respond to the survey, we’ll deliver the results to MPs in the form of an open letter in the Hill Times newspaper.
Here is a list what we expect to be on the agenda in Ottawa this fall.[2] Will you tell us which of these issues is most important to you for our open letter?
The Conservatives are trying to raise the profile of their new leader, Andrew Scheer, and will be using the fall as an opportunity to try to push forward their political agenda by stoking fear and misinformation about things like asylum seekers and tax reform.
There are a lot of other important issues on the table this fall - like the renegotiation of NAFTA, marijuana legalization, and carbon pricing - some of which we’ll need to critique and others we’ll need to support. Let’s show our power as a community and welcome MPs back to Ottawa with a strong message about our priorities.
If enough of you weigh in on our survey, we’ll make sure the results get in front of MPs' faces by publishing an open letter ad in the Hill Times - a Parliament Hill newspaper that is widely read by MPs and political staffers.
First we need you to let us know what you want us to highlight. Which upcoming fall issue is most important to you?
Pushing for a roll back of the worst parts of Harper’s secret police bill, C-51 Getting toxic ISDS provisions out of NAFTA Supporting the government’s new tax reform proposal Advocating for fair and sustainable regulations for marijuana legalization Pushing Canada to accept more refugees fleeing Trump’s America Supporting the government’s new carbon pricing legislation Calling for more funding for clean drinking water on reserves
Whether it’s pushing for a progressive new government in BC or holding the Conservatives to account for their support of far-right website The Rebel, we’ve shown so far in 2017 that when we work together and run smart campaigns, we can hold the powerful to account.
Let us know which issues you care about most, and we’ll make sure your voice makes it to Ottawa as MPs gear up for the fall session.
With gratitude,
Logan, Katelynn, and Rachel N on behalf of the Leadnow team
