It’s time to have the tough conversations about the future of Vancouver Island’s forests
Dear Paov,
Let’s Talk Forests.
Last March, we hit the road on Vancouver Island with our friends at Sierra Club BC. We hosted four public meetings about old-growth rainforests and the need to transition to sustainable second-growth logging.
The meetings were tense, but they were absolutely invaluable.
And so, in less than two weeks, we’re going back.
Our Let’s Talk Forests tour kicks off in Port Hardy in two weeks, and from there continues to Campbell River, Duncan, Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Courtenay.
How do we protect the remaining old-growth on Vancouver Island and make a just transition to second-growth forestry? How do we manage forests in a way that respects the rights and authority of the Indigenous Nations on whose territories the trees grow? How do we ensure healthy ecosystems and a balance between forestry, tourism, fishing and other values, all within a changing climate?
We don’t have all the answers, but we’re aiming to kick-start these hard conversations and spur this change from the grassroots upwards.

Our forests and the economies they support are in a time of uncertainty. But if we work together we can manage these landscapes in a way that prioritizes Indigenous rights, protects endangered ecosystems and works for local communities!
