Peel Supreme Court Challenge: VICTORY!!

Peel Supreme Court Challenge: VICTORY!! r1 ... A Supreme Court Victory in the Peel Watershed! r33

We’re celebrating a massive legal victory for three Yukon First Nations and the pristine Peel Watershed!!

The Supreme Court ruled that the Yukon government must complete meaningful final consultations on a land use plan that protects 80% of the pristine watershed. Not only does this judgment protect the Peel from the Yukon government’s attempt to open up 70% of the watershed to mining, oil and gas, it also confirms the obligation of governments to respect modern-day treaties  like the Umbrella Final Agreement with the three Yukon First Nations.

At RAVEN, we relish each and every court decision that protects lands and upholds First Nations rights and title. But this victory is extra-special to us. Let me tell you why.

When Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in, Vuntut Gwitchin and Na Cho Nyäk Dun First first asked us to help them raise funds in order to fully participate in the Supreme Court of Canada, last November, we knew we only had a few months to raise the money. The hearing date had already set for March 22, 2017. Of course we said yes - how could we not, given what was at stake? But for a small organization like RAVEN, it was a huge leap of faith.

And it worked - we raised $119,000 for the Yukon Nations in only a few months.

What made this leap of faith possible is this incredible community that you are part of. Knowing we have supporters like you gave us the confidence to say take this case on, and deliver meaningful support to Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in, Vuntut Gwitchin and Na Cho Nyäk Dun First Nations.

The Peel victory is proof that RAVEN's strategy works. Despite the cost and the lengthy timeframes of these cases, Indigenous Peoples hold powerful rights that, when defended and upheld in court, protect wild and sacred places. Today's Supreme Court victory demonstrates what can be achieved when you stand with First Nations and put reconciliation into action.

Thank you for your part in making a better world!
