As the sun sets earlier and earlier, and the nights get colder and longer, we are thinking about the Indigenous nations who uphold their fight for justice throughout the whole year. You can help power the movement of allies who are waking up to the injustices to Indigenous Peoples and the land, by supporting their struggle with consistent, monthly donations to RAVEN’s Circle of Allies.
“I think many people look at what is going on in the world and feel impotent and say “What can I do?” or worse “I can’t do anything to change things”. But you are doing something that we can all join in together. My analogy is a fish...a salmon… The Indigenous people taking the fight to the courts are the head, RAVEN is the body giving the support, and everyone donating money is the tail powering the movement forward. RAVEN donors like you support 14 nations in BC and Alberta who are the vanguards of justice for Indigenous rights and the lands we all love. These nations are literally on the front lines. They are the first to see the effects of pipelines, oil spills, tar sands extraction, open-pit mining, and climate change. They are the first to respond to the crises that result from poor resource extraction practices and laws. They are the the people who go to the courts to defend their land and culture from future devastations, even in the face of ongoing colonialism.

JOIN THE CIRCLE
We want to believe that we live in an era of reconciliation. We asked Chief Marilyn Slett of the Heiltsuk Nation, “what do you want non-native peoples to understand about the Indigenous experience in the legal system?” Marilyn responded: “We’re in an era of reconciliation but what does that mean without having to defend that in the courtroom?”
We have a long way to go to bring the light of justice to Canada’s Indigenous Peoples. We each have to find our own ways to do that.
