Jan. 31:
Indigenous Leadership Speaks on Fish Farm Eviction Struggle
Where: Human and Social Development Building, A240, UVic
When: Janunary 31st, 2018, 7:00-9:00 PM,
What: Frontline Indigenous Leadership Speaks on Fish Farm Struggle
Fundraising: Event By Donation, and Raffle for Local Art
The 31-year struggle to evict open-net fish farms is approaching a crucial date: in June, the BC NDP government that swore to uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People will decide whether to revoke or renew many of the tenures for Marine Harvest and Cermaq. The continued clear and unified voice of eight Kwakwaka'wakw nations should make this a simple decision: Fish Farms Out Now!
We invite you to come and hear the latest in the struggle from the indigenous leadership at the front of it. We will hear from Molina Dawson and Karissa Glendale who were part of occupying the Midsummer Island fish farm and have been targeted by Marine Harvest for upholding their ancestral responsibilities to the land. We will also hear from hereditary leadership about a key meeting with John Horgan and other NDP cabinet members happening the previous day.
The NDP's decision on Site C has so far shown that the Horgan government is continuing the long, colonial history of 'disappointing' indigenous people. The NDP's decision on fish farms tenure will mark the next major test of this government's commitment to address colonialism, and we need everyone's support to pressure this government to do better.

Feb. 2 and Feb. 23:
Two Indigenous Poets Visit Victoria
I am hoping you can help us put the word out to the Indigenous communities that in February we are having two Indigenous poets as feature readers at Planet Earth Poetry on Friday, February 2 and another on Friday, February 23.
On February 2 Lisa Bird-Wilson is one of two feature readers.
Her bio:
Lisa Bird-Wilson is a Saskatchewan Métis and nêhiyaw writer whose fiction book, Just Pretending (Coteau Books 2013), was a finalist for the national Danuta Gleed Literary Award and won four Saskatchewan Book Awards, including 2014 Book of the Year. Bird-Wilson’s debut poetry collection, The Red Files (Nightwood Editions 2016), is inspired by family and archival sources and reflects on the legacy of the residential school system and the fragmentation of families and histories. Bird-Wilson lives in Saskatoon with her family of seven children, one spouse. She works at the Gabriel Dumont Institute.
On February 23 we have Garry Gottfriedson as one of the two feature readers.
This is his bio:
Biography of Garry Gottfriedson, M.A.Ed
Gottfriedson is from Kamloops, BC. . He was born into a rodeo/ranching family. He is an avid horseman, and is strongly rooted in his Secwepemc (Shuswap) cultural teachings. He holds a Masters of Arts Education Degree from Simon Fraser University. In 1987, the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado awarded a Creative Writing Scholarship to Gottfriedson. There, he studied under Allen Ginsberg, Marianne Faithful and others. Gottfriedson has 10 published books. He has read from his work across Canada, United States, Europe, and Asia. His work has been anthologized and published nationally and internationally.
We meet at Hillside Coffee & Tea 1633 Hillside Avenue. The evening starts at 7:30 with an open mic for poets who want to read one of their own works and then we have the feature readers after that.
Thanks for spreading the word on this. Our website reflects readers in the current month.
In good spirit
Daniel
