Hurray for RAVEN Supporters!

Hurray for RAVEN Supporters! r1 ...

2017 was a watershed year for RAVEN. Thanks to donors like you, more than $1-Million was disbursed to cover litigation costs aimed at:

• protecting pristine ecosystems in the Peel watershed,

• stopping the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion,

• defending Tsilhqot’in territory against a destructive gold and copper mine.

With RAVEN’s support, Indigenous Nations led seven legal actions to protect their rights, their culture and the environment that sustains us all. We are so proud to be in alliance with you, standing together in support of justice for First Nations!

RAVEN’s strategic approach is working: together we are riding wave after wave of victories in the courts. By donating to RAVEN, you are part of a groundbreaking movement for Indigenous rights and respect for the Earth.

"It’s not every-day that we come across an organization such as yours that would assist First Nations with such a cause as ours. Mahsi cho for all your efforts Raven. It is been an honor to work with you." — Chief Roberta Chief Roberta Joseph, Tr'ondek Hwech'in First Nation

Victory in the Peel! In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the plan to protect the majority of the Peel Watershed in northern Yukon. This is a massive victory for Yukon First Nations and cause for environmental celebration on a global scale. Now, one of the largest unspoiled natural areas left in North America will be preserved. This exquisite and pristine land will continue to be stewarded by an Indigenous-led coalition, thanks to the support of RAVEN Allies.

Taseko defeated! In December, the Federal Court dismissed Taseko’s last attempt via two judicial reviews to overturn the federal rejection of their doomed “New Prosperity” mine at Teztan Biny (Fish Lake)! The company that doesn’t understand the meaning of “No” has now appealed this decision - but the Tsilhqot’in are ready for them and Raven will be standing with Tsilhqot’in communities.

On the front lines of Big Oil, the Petronas pipeline project was axed, more than $625,000 was raised for the Nations working to stop the Kinder Morgan pipeline, and another $100,000 was donated to the Heiltsuk Nation for their legal action in the wake of the Nathan E. Stewart diesel spill.

Looking ahead to 2018, RAVEN will be launching new campaigns and continuing with others that are wending their way through the court system. Among our partners are the Heiltsuk Nation, the Beaver Lake Cree Nation, the Tsilhqot’in National Government, and four Nations in the Pull Together campaign: the Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish, Coldwater and Stk’emlupsemc Te Secwepemc Nations.

We hope you will stay with us for the exciting journey ahead. In the meantime, please accept our gratitude for your support, and our wishes for a peaceful, prosperous and happy 2018.

In solidarity,

Susan Smitten, and the entire RAVEN team
