Community Rights and Rights of Nature
April 12th, 2018 Presentation

We can protect communities, workers and "Rights of Nature" by saying "NO!" to corporate so-called "rights". It just takes a simple transformative common law application revealed by the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF).  Outlined on the CELDF website you can get a more detailed explanation - https://celdf.org/rights/rights-of-nature/ . They have created a pro-active legal framework that ends the currently law-ordained corporate "right" to destroy and harm workers, communities and the environment.

Thomas Linzey created the CELDF in 1995 to help people in communities research environmental laws, or in short, to understand the things he learned during his legal internship at the EPA.  He is currently their very perceptive lead lawyer. He brings a fascinating wealth of historical legal knowledge about how corporations have dragged us to this point. Thomas is actually training communities, leading to victories.

You can watch his interview now.

New Zealand has provided this type of protection for many years and has more recently taken this concept to a new level by granting a Sacred Mountain, that the Maori consider an Ancestor, personhood and therefore human rights. This is the 3rd geographic location in New Zealand to be granted the right to be protected from environmental damage.

In northern India, issued a ruling declaring that both the Ganga and Yumana rivers are also “legal persons/living persons.”

Shannon LeBlanc will host a discussion about doing this in the CRD and then BC.
More event details (time & location) coming soon.

REMINDER
On March 13, join the Social Environmental Alliance for a community
discussion on supporting ongoing resistance to the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

Join us Tuesday, March 13th at 7pm at 1923 Fernwood Road
In March, members of Tsleil-Waututh will establish frontline resistance
grounded in their spirituality and culture to stop the Kinder Morgan tar
sands pipeline. On Saturday March 10th, they will kick things off with a
mass mobilization supporting Kwekwecnewtxw (www.protecttheinlet.ca) in the
lower mainland area. They are inviting thousands of people to join this
mobilization and send a clear message to Prime Minister Trudeau: the
Kinder Morgan pipeline will never be built.
