Milestones for Indigenous rights

Milestones for Indigenous rights r1 ... PAOV —

There are moments in our shared history that feel truly significant. On March 26th, our Prime Minister honoured, recognized and exonerated six Tsilhqot'in chiefs: Chief Lhats'as?in, Chief Biyil, Chief Tilaghed, Chief Taqed, Chief Chayses and Chief Ahan. P.M. Trudeau said:

“Today our government acknowledges what the colonial government of the day was unwilling to accept. That these six chiefs were leaders and warriors of the Tsilhqot'in Nation, and that the Tsilhqot’in people they led maintained rights to land that had never been ceded. Even though the colonial government did not recognize these rights, the chiefs acted in accordance with their own laws to defend their territory, their people and their way of life. They acted as leaders of a proud and independent nation facing a threat from another nation.”

These steps towards reconciliation are driven in part by people like you, and by the work that RAVEN does for Indigenous Nations who are fighting in the courts to have their rights and title recognized. First Nations from Burrard Inlet to the tar sands are still having to wage an unequal battle in the courts to force the “government of the day” to accept what it is “unwilling to accept”, i.e. respectful Nation to Nation relations. RAVEN shines a light on these injustices. Together we work for reconciliation with all Indigenous Peoples, and demand recognition of Indigenous rights.

Step up now to support RAVEN’s laser focus on Indigenous rights and reconciliation.

Chief Marilyn Slett of the Heiltsuk Nation said, “We’re in an era of reconciliation but what does that mean without having to defend that in the courtroom?” As one of RAVEN’s supporters, you share our vision for a country that honours the ancestral laws, rights and stewardship values of Indigenous Peoples and their equitable access to the justice system within a thriving natural environment. You stand shoulder to shoulder in support of the rights of Indigenous Peoples, so that together we can help to achieve parity in the courts for the people on whose land we live.

You have backed some incredible wins!! You heard this week’s great news that Kinder Morgan is suspending all non-essential activities and related spending on the Trans Mountain Expansion Project until at least the end of May. We don’t know where this will lead yet, but rest assured that RAVEN will continue fundraising to support the Nations at the front lines of their legal fight. What we do know is that Indigenous rights, when they are exercised, defended and enforced, command the attention of government and industry.

That is why standing with Indigenous Peoples so they can access justice is not only the right thing to do — it’s a game changer.

RAVEN currently supports 14 nations in BC and Alberta who are the vanguards of justice for Indigenous rights and the lands we love. And now RAVEN is being approached by Indigenous nations in Ontario who need legal defence funding. RAVEN is a national charity and we are actively working to spread our wings into eastern Canada later this year. Will you help RAVEN grow its impact now?

We have a long way to go to help bring the light of justice to Canada’s Indigenous Peoples. We each have to find our own ways to do that. Will you help spread awareness about RAVEN’s strategic mission to raise legal defence funds for the Indigenous Peoples in Canada who are defending the integrity of their treaty rights and traditional lands, for the benefit of all Canadians?

With thanks for all that you do for social and environmental justice.

"In this era of reconciliation I think we are not moving fast enough to help First Nations (who) are continuing to have to go to court to protect their land, their way of life and to protect the environment. This is expensive and a way that corporations are using to get their way. Appalling! I am giving to help them win their cases." ~ RAVEN donor.
