Chief Germaine Anderson of Beaver Lake Cree Nation has launched a bold and brilliant legal move that stands to change the game in Canada’s tar sands.
The Tar Sands Trial is RAVEN’s longest-running campaign. The case is of a scope and scale never before seen in Canada.

On April 19, Chief Anderson asked the court to award the Beaver Lake Cree a portion of trial costs in advance, based on the precedent-setting nature of the tar sands case. Known as the “Advance Cost Order”, this is the same strategy that allowed the Tsilhqot’in to take their title case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, and win.
