It’s amazing what we can do together.
Today, the BC government acted to safeguard our public blood system, following two years of your advocacy for a BC ban on payment for blood and plasma collection.
Thank you.
In 2016, when a private, for-profit blood broker announced they planned to set up shop in B.C., BC Health Coalition members sprang into action.
You hosted local townhall meetings, gathered thousands of petitions, and generated headlines across the province calling for protection for B.C.’s blood supply.
Today, thanks to your compelling case for a BC ban on pay-for-plasma, the Voluntary Blood Donations Act was tabled in the Legislature. The law bans pay-for-plasma in our province.
This... law will help protect the health and well-being of the many people in B.C. who rely on our voluntary blood and plasma collection system.
That means for-profit blood brokers will be unable to collect private donations for export to the global market where patients in Canada can’t benefit from them. And it means private blood brokers can’t draw patients away from the public collection system, a problem other jurisdictions are now struggling with.
Our sincere thanks to the many other safe blood advocates who helped make this happen, including the BC Hemophilia Society and BloodWatch.org.
The law still needs to pass a vote in the Legislature. We have been meeting with members of all parties and are hopeful that the legislation will have the support of the majority of members of the government.
