Have your say on national pharmacare

NationBuilder r1

Dear Paov --

A federally appointed Advisory Council has just opened up their online consultation questionnaire on the issue of a national drug plan. The Advisory Council wants to hear from Canadians like yourself on what you think a national drug plan should look like.

Please fill out the 10-minute questionnaire now in order to ensure that a national pharmacare plan is fair, healthy, and affordable for all.

We know that medicine is health care. However, many British Columbians can’t access medicine they need because of costs.

According to one study, 29 percent of respondents in British Columbia – more than any other province in the country –... said they or someone else in their household hadn’t taken medication as prescribed because they couldn’t afford to. [1]

It’s clear that we need a national drug plan that is universal, public, accessible, and affordable for everyone.

The deadline to submit to the online questionnaire is September 28, 2018. Our friends at the Canadian Health Coalition (CHC) put together a guide in order to help you submit a questionnaire. To view the CHC guide, click here.

However, we know that entrenched interests from the pharmaceutical and insurance industries will not go down without a fight.

We also know a parliamentary budget officer conservatively estimated Canadians could save over $4 billion by going with a universal drug plan. [2]

A more realistic estimate says that we could save almost $11 billion a year according to study done by our friends at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Canadian Doctors for Medicare. [3]

That’s billions of dollars that could be used to provide Canadians with medicines and the health care if we go with a universal drug plan.

If we flood the online questionnaire with hundreds of our submissions, then the federal Advisory Council will be compelled to recommend a universal plan because the federal government will know that the voting public cares very deeply about an accessible national drug plan.
