This morning we received some excellent news.
The Federal Court of Appeal has overturned the federal approval and stopped construction on the Trans Mountain pipeline and tankers project.
The judgement confirms the concerns we’ve shared all along: the environmental review was inadequate, and the federal government failed in its duty to consult Indigenous communities affected by this risky project.

At this time of celebration, we are incredibly grateful for the courage and dedication of the Indigenous nations leading this legal battle, including West Coast’s client, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. Our thanks also go out to our environmental allies, and the local governments who stepped up to challenge Trans Mountain in the courts.
And of course, we are very thankful for you, and the thousands of people like you who... have supported legal efforts to protect the environment, communities and Indigenous rights from Trans Mountain. This victory is yours to celebrate, too!
With Canada as the pipeline’s new owner, and a federal government that says it remains “absolutely committed” to moving ahead with the project, we are not letting our guard down just yet.
But one thing is for sure – this major legal win will have huge implications for Trans Mountain. This project was always a risky investment, and it just got a lot riskier.
West Coast will continue in our key role as lawyers and strategists in the Kinder Morgan campaign as we enter this next chapter of the Trans Mountain saga.
