Environmental Educator, 6-month contract, part time

The BC Sustainable Energy Association is looking to fill two contractor positions as Environmental Educator with the Cool It! Climate Leadership Training program in Metro Vancouver and the Capital Regional District.

As Environmental Educator, you will represent BCSEA in Grade 4 to 7 classrooms throughout the region. You will provide high quality delivery of the 90-minute educational workshops on Climate Change issues and its solutions, while building positive relationships with teachers, staff and administration to ensure the successful completion of the Cool It! Challenge and accurate reporting to funders of the program. You will represent BCSEA in... a professional manner, and model the values of BCSEA to create a safe, fun and supportive environment for student-centered learning, by presenting clear and effective lessons, utilizing different methods to engage students in learning, and facilitating positive peer interactions among students from diverse populations. You will deliver lessons and follow-up support to assist teachers and administration feel well supported to deliver and meet BC Ministry of education curriculum requirements. You will communicate proactively, politely and precisely to ensure teachers have all required materials and are well prepared prior to the workshop with pre-workshop resources and for the workshop itself, as well as timely and effective follow-up to ensure teachers are ready for the next program steps. You will work closely with the Program Manager in program evaluation, editing, maintaining, and updating educational materials and resources as needed, marketing and promotion of site and programs to surrounding and outlying communities, including schools, partners and BCSEA chapters, and raising any questions and concerns effectively.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Facilitation experience: 2+ years of facilitation experience in the field of school, visitor, camp or park education programs on environmental, natural history, outdoor or science programming; Ability to communicate effectively in large and small groups of children and adults; possess strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility: Availability to work varied hours over course of school year on a part-time basis; Ability to travel throughout the region during school hours
  • Ability to perform administrative duties that includes maintaining and preparing records and reports electronically
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers; Ability to work well both independently and effectively in a collaborative team environment to achieve collective results
  • High level of professionalism and follow through
  • Working knowledge of Climate Science, Environmental Impact, and Behaviour Change. Prefer BA in Environmental Education or Outdoor Recreation and/or B.Sc., or equivalent training and certification; Minimum: Working towards and/or completion of some Post Secondary courses in Science, Geography and/ or related fields is an asset
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset
  • Current Criminal Record Check
  • Access to computer and high-speed internet, latest version of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and familiarity with the Google Suite; capacity to respond to phone calls and emails within 24 hours.
  • Regions required: Metro Vancouver; Capital Regional District
  • Scope of work: delivery to approx. 30 classrooms (approx. 6 hours of work per class)
  • Timeline of contract: January 1- June 30, 2018
