Take action to prevent wildlife extinction in Canada

Dear Paov,

It’s time for the federal government to stop dragging their feet and take action against the extinction of wildlife in Canada.

We now know that half of Canadian species are experiencing population declines and are vanishing from the wild. This trend can’t continue.

We have until Jan. 18 so write now and tell the federal government to protect ten species facing extinction!

The top wildlife experts in Canada are responsible for recommending which species in Canada are at risk of extinction. Yet the federal government chooses to ignore this science. As a result, there are 187 species that are at risk in Canada that don’t have any protection from being killed or having their habitat destroyed. This dismissal of science and lack of action is a black eye for Canada – a country world-renowned for its pristine wilderness and majestic wildlife.

There is an urgent opportunity right now – until Jan. 18 – for you to have an impact. The Canadian government is considering the advice of wildlife experts from the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada and is proposing to add ten at-risk species to the federal species at risk list and to increase the risk status of one.

Of the ten species to be added to the list, some of them were recommended for listing eight years ago. Finally, the federal government is willing to consider providing these species with legal protection and increase the risk status of one.

The species include:

  • Grizzly bears - western populations
  • American badgers
  • Western toads
  • Wolverines
  • Yellow-banded bumblebees
  • Gypsy cuckoo bumblebees
  • Sable Island sweat bees
  • Audouin's night-stalking tiger beetles
  • Roell's brotherella moss
  • Barn owls - increase from special concern to threatened
We must protect these species that are near and dear to the hearts of Canadians. We must also not forget the the benefits they provide us with. Bees are responsible for pollinating our food and grizzly bears are an integral part of our tourism industry. Write Now! Let’s tell the government to add these species to the Species at Risk Act so they will finally receive legal protection from being killed, harmed or having their habitat destroyed.

For the wildlife,
