The Resistible Rise of the Far Right in Europe

Walter Baier

The rise of the radical right in Europe raises many questions. The key here is the crisis of European democracies. To counteract this development, the Left is confronted with great challenges: overcoming mass unemployment and nationalism, and defending democracy.

The victory of the candidate of the Greens, Alexander Van der Bellen in the second round of Austria's presidential elections over the far right contender is certainly a reason for relief. In case the latter one had prevailed Austria would be the first West European country with a straight forward radical right winger as head of state; who moreover in line with Nazi tradition regards Austria as part and parcel of historic German territory,...

Energy East has no place in a climate plan.

Any proper review of Energy East would conclude it cannot be built. r1

Friends,

Yesterday, the National Energy Board announced it will start its review process for the Energy East pipeline.

We know that any proper review of this pipeline will conclude that it simply cannot be built. Energy East is heavily opposed by communities along its route -- from Manitoba, to Quebec, to New Brunswick. The project does not have the consent of First Nations. And the pipeline, which would pump 1.1 million barrels of dirty tar sands oil to the Atlantic Coast everyday, is also bound to fail any kind of climate test.

It’s time for Canada to move beyond the tar sands in order to take bold, ambitious climate action -- and right now, we have a unique opportunity to get this message across to federal leaders....

The EU Referendum:
The Case for a Socialist Yes Vote

John Palmer

What attitude should socialists take to the referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union (EU)?

It is possible to trace the roots of the movement for European unity and integration to the inter-war decades. A number of loosely linked groups -- some led by radical federalists including socialists, liberals and supporters of the League of Nations -- argued for a federal, united Europe.

The coming to power of Italian and Spanish fascism and Adolf Hitler's Nazi dictatorship swept such currents to the margins of political debate. One of the militants of this early movement for European unity was a young French professional economist, diplomat and businessman, Jean Monnet. His wartime...

Asian Supply Chain Countries Under ILO Spotlight - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 14 June 2016 (ITUC OnLine): This month’s ILO Conference in Geneva heard testimony from workers from a range of Asian countries, underlining the challenges workers have to overcome in the face of increased repression from governments and employers in the region.

Indonesian representatives testified about violent attacks on workers by police and armed thugs. When workers were shut out of wage-setting mechanisms and took to the streets in 2015 to protest, the authorities reacted by arresting more than 20 demonstrators and banning assemblies in key parts of the capital Jakarta.

A silver lining for animals in last week's Supreme Court decision

*|MC:SUBJECT|* r1 The bestiality case isn't all bad news for animals. Here's why.

Dear PAOV,

The Supreme Court of Canada sent shock waves around the world last week when it ruled that most forms of bestiality are legal in Canada. According to the Court, sexually abusing animals is only a crime if the abuse involves intercourse.

Animal Justice intervened in the disturbing court case last November to speak up for the animals. Like you, we wish the result had been different.

But there's good news, too. Many parts of the decision are actually extremely positive for animals, and we know that Animal Justice made a huge...

Why Should Labour Support the Undemocratic European Union?

Why Should Labour Support the Undemocratic European Union?:
The Case to Leave

Maurice Glasman

The origins of the European Union (EU) are, in many ways, inspiring and almost miraculous. Co-operation in the iron and steel industries between France and West Germany was built on an economic strategy that gave not only dignity, but some power to workers, through the balance of power in corporate governance which gave a parity to capital and labour. It recognised a mutual interest between nations that had engaged in two abominable wars in the previous forty years. Co-determination in industry underpinned co-operation. Extending this to uphold a non exclusively commodity status for agriculture, was also, in its way, sublime. France and Germany retained human scale agricultural production and slowed the...
