Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples’ rights, has received worrying reports that illegal fishermen are targeting the waters around the island home of the uncontacted Sentinelese tribe on India’s Andaman Islands.

Seven men identified as Burmese fishermen were apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard near North Sentinel Island earlier this month. Worryingly, one man was reportedly found on the island itself, in close proximity to the uncontacted tribespeople.

The Sentinelese are the most vulnerable society on the planet and reject any contact with outsiders. Due to their complete isolation, they are likely to have no immunity to common diseases such as flu and measles and the chances of them being wiped out by an epidemic are very high.

Survival International has welcomed the authorities’ swift action in apprehending the illegal fishermen around North Sentinel and urges them to remain vigilant. It also calls for an end to the daily intrusions into the forest of the neighboring Jarawa tribe as a matter of urgency.

Urgent Action: The Guarani need their land!

“We are fighting for our land, and we are being killed, one by one.”
Eliseu Lopes, Guarani leader

20 November 2014: Survival is receiving reports that Eliseu's community is being attacked by gunmen.

Earlier this month, Guarani leader Marinalva Manoel was stabbed to death after traveling 1,000km to Brasília to lobby the government to recognize Guarani land rights.

Guarani leaders are singled out, attacked and killed by ranchers’ gunmen as a result of their campaign for their ancestral land to be mapped out and returned to them. Many leaders have received death threats. According to Brazil’s constitution, all the tribe’s land should have been returned to them by 1993.

Forced to live in overcrowded reserves and roadside camps while ranchers earn huge profits on their land, the Guarani suffer alarming rates of malnutrition, suicide and violence. A recent wave of eviction orders threatens to further worsen their horrific plight.

Despite many promises, successive governments have failed to resolve Brazil’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Part I: State Terror and the Murder of 43 Students

Richard Roman and Edur Velasco Arregui

The Mexican government, welcomed as a partner of the Canadian and U.S. governments in continental economic development (North American Free Trade Agreement – NAFTA) and continental security also happens to partner in crime and the slaughter of its own people. The murders and disappearances of the students from the Rural Normal "Raúl Isidro Burgos," of Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, Mexico on September 26, 2014 in Iguala, was a crime of the State, as hundreds of thousands of Mexicans have claimed in their protests. The governmental investigation that followed the September 2014 attack on these students has been...

Massive illegal forest clearance threatens unique uncontacted tribe

The last uncontacted Indians outside Amazonia are running out of forest to hide in, say campaigners, as alarming new photos reveal rampant, illegal destruction of their territory.

Ayoreo-Totobiegosode Indians, whose uncontacted relatives are hiding in the last patches of forest in western Paraguay, have watched helplessly as cattle-ranching firms illegally invade their territory and raze the forest.

The Ayoreo have recently discovered miles of cattle fences illegally built in their territory – in Paraguay, this is always the first step to clearing the forest. The Ayoreo have recently discovered miles of cattle fences illegally built in their territory – in Paraguay, this is always the first step to clearing the forest.© GAT/ Survival

Dining Out in Dinkytown:
Remembering the Minneapolis Truckers’ Strikes of 1934

Bryan D. Palmer

If you are in Minneapolis, after a hard day's night, the place to go for a morning pick-me-up is Al's Breakfast. Or so I was informed. Being in the Twin Cities in mid-July, I made my way to the legendary AM eatery, located in the heart of Dinkytown, the neighborhood adjacent to the University of Minnesota where Al's is located.

Mind you, no one had told me anything about the place. My heart sank as I rounded the 14th Avenue corner and took in the line that had formed outside of an establishment half way down the block. As I shuffled into place at the end of the queue and...

Our victory

Friend --

I want to express my heart-felt appreciation to you and everyone who made our unprecedented election victory possible.

I am humbled by the results.

We made history — topping the polls with several thousand more votes than any other candidate for municipal office has ever received in the City of Victoria — more than 14,700 votes.

Our support extends to every corner of the community — with an inspiring and determined “ground campaign” that saw our volunteers knock on every door in Victoria nearly two times over, and more than 500 residents who proclaimed their support “for people and the planet” by proudly displaying a lawn sign in front of their home.

I owe this victory to you, and to my family and friends who’ve supported me.

Now, we must continue to work together to ensure that social justice, ecological responsibility...

Friend --

What else can I say?

I need you to get out and vote.....

Today.

For 3 years, I've stood up for your interests at City Hall — advocating for social justice, environmental responsibility and good government in municipal decision-making.

Now, I need you to take action by casting a ballot.

We may not agree on every issue. But if you think I've provided an important perspective on City Council and the CRD Board, please support my candidacy for re-election.

Together, we can continue standing up for people and the planet, building a strong community that:

  • looks after people who need help,
  • protects our environment,
  • and provides cost-effective public services.

Thank you for your support and for participating in our local democracy.

The elephant in the room

r1

Dear friend,

This week, just weeks after the largest climate mobilisation ever, the world's two biggest polluters -- the United States and China -- announced their most ambitious climate action yet. That is not a coincidence: it's a sign that our pressure is working, and that we need to apply much more.

The emissions of China and the US have been used by governments around the world as an excuse to dodge their own responsibilities. But this new agreement leaves these governments with nowhere left to hide and opens the door for real progress from global governments. Right now, world leaders are converging on Australia for the G20 leaders summit and we have momentum on our side.

But Tony Abbott, Australia’s conservative Prime Minister and host of the G20, is refusing to allow a meaningful discussion of climate change at the G20. Climate change is the elephant in the...

Wisc. woman dies, comes back to life, but faces bankruptcy after insurance won’t pay ‘wrong’ hospital

12 NOV 2014 AT 09:17 ET Megan Rothbauer faces bankruptcy over legal bills (WISC-TV/screen grab) DON'T MISS STORIES. FOLLOW RAW STORY!

A Wisconsin woman said this week that she may have to file for bankruptcy because she was taken to an out-of-network hospital after having a heart attack, but now she owes more than $50,000 more than she would have if she had been taken to a hospital less than half a mile away.

Megan Rothbauer, 30, told WISC-TV that she technically died of cardiac arrest last September, and was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, where she spent the next ten days in a coma.

She lived, but was shocked to receive a $254,000 bill from the hospital. Blue Cross Blue Shield, her insurer, eventually agreed to pay its in-network rate of $156,000 to offset the bill. And St. Mary’s negotiated to reduce the remainder of the bill by $98,000.

That left Rothbauer owing more than $50,000 instead of the $1,500 maximum out-of-pocket fee that she would have had to pay at an in-network hospital that was just three blocks from St. Mary’s.

“I was unconscious when I was taken to the hospital,” she pointed out. “Unfortunately, I was taken to the wrong hospital for my insurance.”

“I was in a coma. I couldn’t very well wake up and say, ‘Hey, take me to the next hospital.’ It was the closest hospital to where I had my event, so naturally the ambulance took me there. No fault to them. It’s unfortunate that Meriter is in network and was only three blocks away from St. Mary’s.”

Because of her possible bankruptcy, Rothbauer has had to put off marrying her future husband, Ben Johnsen, until her financial situation is resolved.

Disgusting Lawsuit against Protestors

Tar sands giant Kinder Morgan is suing environmentalists for tens of millions of dollars for trespassing in a public park.

Tell it to drop this ridiculous lawsuit and stop bullying Canadians!

Sign the Petition

So, this is really happening: American tar sands giant Kinder Morgan is suing a handful of protestors for tens of millions of dollars for “trespassing” in a Canadian public park.

At least there is a comical part to it -- the pipeline company's lawyer is trying to argue anti-pipeline protesters’ facial expressions constitute “assault.” In response, people have been taking to social media to make fun of the company by posting pictures of their "Kinder Morgan face". Even Vancouver's mayor joined in the fun.

Unfortunately, Kinder Morgan's 1,000-page lawsuit is no laughing matter. The superstar polluter is not only asking for an injunction against a few activists legally protesting the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline, but for $5.6 million in expenses and $88 million in lost revenues. Per month.

This lawsuit is nothing short of harassment.

Tell Kinder Morgan to drop this ridiculous lawsuit now.

Beyond intimidating people, Kinder Morgan is proving it's willing to do almost anything to get this pipeline project approved. With days to go before the Vancouver municipal election, it's investing big in pro-pipeline political parties, working alongside former Harper government strategists and oil lobbyists to get the job done.

Luxembourg leaks

Pepsi, Ikea, HSBC, Burberry, Procter & Gamble, Heinz, JP Morgan, FedEx, Amazon, Deutsche Bank... the list of corporate tax dodgers using Luxembourg sweetheart tax deals is almost endless.

Tell Luxembourg to stop aiding the tax dodging of the world’s biggest corporations.

Big news coming out of Luxembourg! Some of the world’s biggest companies, from Dyson to FedEx and from Burberry to Amazon have all secured secret sweetheart tax deals from Luxembourg, that allow many to slash their tax bills, in some cases to almost nothing.

The Luxembourg Prime Minister is unrepentant. He says “Luxembourg was not breaking any rules.” Of course its not -- his government wrote and devised the laws he says the country is not breaking!

Luxembourg is a tiny place where small ripples can make big waves, where the government is open and accessible. So if we make a lot of noise, we would have a big impact on the government there.

Let’s show Luxembourg that we’re fed up with it facilitating corporate tax dodging.

This week @ rabble.ca: Harper's war on Canadian rights and freedoms

rabble.ca - News for the rest of us

14 Nov 2014

Hi rabble readers,

Every year on Remembrance Day, Canadians honour the men and women who went off to war to defend our rights and freedoms. As we take time to remember their sacrifice, our own government is dismantling these very same rights -- while Stephen Harper stages a series of photo ops across the Pacific. You can read a selection of Remembrance Day reflections from our contributors here.

On Wednesday, Finance Minister Joe Oliver presented the fall Fiscal Update, with a much-reduced projected surplus. In his latest report, Karl Nerenberg explains how politically, that's designed to put the opposition leaders in a corner. Want to see more independent reporting from Parliament? Please chip in now to keep rabble.ca on the Hill!
