Supporting my candidacy for CRD Director

Friend --

Election Day is right around the corner.

Urgent campaign ramp-up expenses have already been paid:
-$1505 for the final lawn signs
-$500 to rent a committee room
-$1700 to Canada Post towards a joint mail-out

Now, I would still like to be able to do:
-$350 for an election night party
-$400 for get out the vote leaflets (all designed and ready to print), and
-$200 to finish importing the entire voters list into our database for e-day

Can you help with a donation to my re-election campaign of $50, $100 or whatever you can afford?

You can donate online, right now. Here's the link.

Donating online by 3 p.m. will allow these last minute expenses to go forward. Please donate right now.

Thank you,

Ben Isitt

Crisis and Class-Struggle in Slovenia:

The Growing Momentum of Socialist Politics

Jaša Lategano

For many liberal spectators, Slovenia was for a long time considered a success story of transition from a ‘socialist dictatorship’ into a ‘parliamentary democracy’ based on a market economy. In the winter of 2012, however, mass popular uprisings swept through the larger cities and eventually brought down the far-right neoliberal government of the Slovenian Democratic Party. What followed was more or less a continuation of the same policies under a nominally ‘centre-left’ government. In a similar way that Tony Blair could be considered Margaret Thatcher's greatest achievement, the technocratic approach to dealing with the manifold crisis devastating Slovenian society in general and the historical achievements of labour movement in particular, has...

A Parliamentary Investigation of the Attack- PASS IT ON

Nov. 3, 2014
I JUST SENT THE FOLLOWING LETTER TO MY MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT. IF YOU AGREE WITH IT, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT.
We need an Independent Investigation into the attacks on our Parliament and soldiers. It must be Televised and Streamed. It must be able to subpoena witnesses and have them testify under oath. And it must be able to independently investigate, separately from the RCMP, CSIS, the police, etc.

New report exposes the 'Dark side of conservation' - News from Survival

New report exposes the 'Dark side of conservation'

Tribal peoples are the best conservationists and guardians of the natural world. Survival's new report reveals how the world's biggest conservation organizations are implicated in their eviction from 'protected areas.'Tribal peoples are the best conservationists and guardians of the natural world. ‘Parks Need Peoples’ campaign launched during World Parks Congress

A hard-hitting new report launched by Survival International – the global movement for tribal peoples’ rights – reveals how conservation has led to the eviction of millions of tribal people from “protected areas.”

Many of the world’s biggest conservation organizations, including WWF and The Nature Conservancy, are implicated in this issue. And United for Wildlife, set up by Prince William and Prince Harry, does not acknowledge calls to back tribal peoples’ rights to live on their traditional lands and hunt for food.

The launch of the “Parks Need Peoples” report coincides with the World Parks Congress in Sydney, a once-in-a-decade global conference on protected areas conservation, and comes ahead of Prince William and Kate’s launch of United for Wildlife in the United States next month.

Survival’s report shows that nearly all protected areas are, or have been, the ancestral homelands of tribal peoples, who have been dependent on, and managed them for millennia. But in the name of “conservation”:

• Tribal peoples are being illegally evicted from these lands.
• They are accused of “poaching” because they hunt their food.
• They face arrest and beatings, torture and death at the hands of anti-poaching squads.
• Although the tribes have been evicted, tourists, and in some cases even fee-paying big-game hunters, are welcomed in.

We're winning again – because of you

SPECIAL REPORT: We did it! Obama – YES, the President! – spoke out against Big Telecom’s Internet slow lane plan.1

Paov, just over a month ago, we took your voice and millions of others around the world into a special invite-only White House meeting with Obama’s senior advisers.2

It’s truly only because of your support that we got this opportunity to amplify everyone’s voice.

During our meeting we told Obama’s advisors that the President needed to speak out against Big Telecom’s slow lane plan in the strongest way possible.3

And on Monday, he did exactly what you, me, and over 5.1 million people from 180 countries around the world asked him to do. In a formal address, he said:

“No service should be stuck in a ‘slow lane’ because it does not pay a fee.”4

THIS IS HUGE, and an unbelievable win for Internet users around the world.

Obama’s statement...

TPP Trade Talks Must Stop - ITUC OnLine

INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION ITUC OnLine TPP Trade Talks Must Stop Brussels, 11 November 2014 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has called on governments to stop negotiations on the “Trans-Pacific Partnership” agreement, criticising the secrecy and corporate bias in the current negotiations. Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said “This secretive trade deal is good for some multinational corporations, but deeply damaging to ordinary people and the very role of governments. Corporate interests are at the negotiating table, but national parliaments and other democratic actors are being kept in the dark. What we do know, much of it through leaks, is that this proposed deal is not about ensuring better livelihoods for people, but about giving multinational companies a big boost to profits. Governments should shut down the negotiations, and not re-open them unless they get genuine and transparent public mandates at home that put people’s interest in the centre.” The current...

rabble.ca - News for the rest of us

Hey rabble readers,

The Jian Ghomeshi allegations of sexual abuse have rocked Canada and beyond. At rabble we have opened up dialogue about sexual abuse and rape culture, addressing topics from sexual assault law in Canada to what you can do to call out sexual harassment. You can find all of our coverage and join in the conversation here.

When Antonia Zerbisias tweeted support for the women accusing Jian Ghomeshi of sexual assault by revealing her own experience with sexual assault, she was not aware it would create a movement. In a rabble exclusive, she brings us the story of #BeenRapedNeverReported.

The latest week in Ottawa has seen a continuing blur of federal political events. There was a Federal Court order to restore refugee health coverage, disturbing news on the environment, abuse...

Harper's Iraq War Plan: Save People by Killing Them?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(((( T h e B u l l e t ))))~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Socialist Project e-bulletin .... No. 1054 .... November 11, 2014
Harper's Iraq War Plan:
Save People by Killing Them?
Gregory Shupak
The Harper government's plan to send Canadian air power to help combat the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq, and possibly Syria, and for Canadian special forces to continue operating there is homicidal, won't achieve its supposed goals and needs to be opposed. Legislation tabled by the federal government on October 3 says that "unless confronted with strong and direct force, the threat ISIL poses to international peace and security, including to Canadian communities, will continue to grow." There is plenty of evidence to suggest that exactly the opposite is true.
James Comey, director of the FBI, told the U.S. Congress that support for IS has increased since the U.S. began the 2014 chapter of its bombing of Iraq. The Guardian puts the number of fighters who have joined IS since the bombing campaign began at 6,000 fighters.
Moreover, there had previously been a split between IS and al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, but the two groups have reconciled in the face of the west's bombing of Syria, which will strengthen both groups and sectarian jihadism more generally.
To say that western states should not be bombing Iraq and Syria is not isolationism and neither does it indicate indifference to the thousands in Iraq and Syria that IS has slaughtered, raped, assaulted and ethnically cleansed. Rather, this position is the only tenable one for people concerned with the inhabitants of the region.
Your new council
Ben speaks at the Defend Our Climate rally on the Dallas Road
waterfront
Friend --
This is election week and the week that your council for the next four years is set in stone.
Imagine how it would feel if when the ballots are counted Ben Isitt didn't win.
Ben won in 2011 with just under 13% of all the people in the city voting for him. As far as municipal election victories go, this is an incredible mandate for a first-time city councillor.
Remember, 3 incumbent councillors were defeated in 2011.
Imagine if that were to happen this time... 3 incumbent councillors including Ben Isitt defeated again... or even 1: outspoken Ben Isitt defeated?
There is an alternative. This week is the week to lock-in the victory.
Every vote that gets into the ballot box counts. But wanting Ben to win is only enough if we act on it.
Please, take my advice on this, if you have not voted already -- today is the day to vote at City Hall -- until 8 pm.
Losing such an amazing advocate for people and the planet could devastate much of the progress that we have made in this city over the past three years.
Get out and vote today!
Supporters of Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples’ rights, called for a boycott of Botswana tourism at the World Travel Market in London today, over the country’s relentless persecution of Africa’s last hunting Bushmen.
On today’s World Responsible Tourism Day, protestors handed leaflets to visitors to the leading travel industry event, where the Botswana Tourism Organisation is hosting a stall all week. Botswana actively promotes visits to the Bushmen’s ancestral land in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, while starving the tribespeople off their land by preventing them from hunting.
New Survey: Half of G20 policies rated as ineffective
A new survey of Labour 20 members representing working people in G20 economies has found that 56 per cent of G20 policies are considered ineffective in improving outcomes for working people.
“More than half of G20 policies have failed to have a positive impact on working people with weak action on issues that could have had an impact on workers lives such as jobs, decent wages and social protection,” said Sharan Burrow, General Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation, on the eve of the annual Labour 20 (L20) Summit in Brisbane, Australia.
More than 200 million people were unemployed in 2013, an...
