IMF and World Bank should support wage- and public investment-led recovery

Brussels, 8 October 2014 (ITUC OnLine): ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow has urged the heads of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, whose annual meetings take place in Washington this weekend (10-12 October), to champion a coordinated wage- and public investment-led recovery strategy that addresses the combined problems of deficient aggregate demand and rising inequality, which are at the root of global economic stagnation and persistently high unemployment:

“In updated economic growth forecasts that he released on Tuesday, the IMF’s chief economist underlined the dangers of ‘secular stagnation’ and called on governments to engage in public infrastructure investments. While such a policy change by the IMF after years of promoting austerity would be welcome, the...

Protecting European Democracy or Reviving the Cold War?

Liz Fekete

A new report by Human Rights First on fascism in Hungary and Greece raises important questions. But its orientation toward U.S. national interests smacks of Cold War thinking.

When we think of the leaders of Europe's far- and extreme-Right parties today, it is easy to ridicule them as fossils, nostalgic for days of Empire and white supremacy, or stranded on pre-second-world war shores, fighting the territorial fights of yesteryear. Yet despite the extreme Right's much-vaunted irredentism, it has also mounted strong critiques of the very modern phenomenon of globalization. The internationalization of capitalism, its unprecedented ability to cross the boundaries of national political and legal jurisdictions, has led to a sea-change in the way...

Members of a hunter-gatherer tribe are reportedly being hunted down and killed by settlers who are invading their lands in southwest Ethiopia.

The Chabu, who number just 1,500, are some of Africa’s last hunter-gatherers. They live in a remote part of Ethiopia’s forest highlands, to the northwest of the Lower Omo Valley.

Settlers from other regions in Ethiopia have been penetrating into the Chabu’s ancestral home. This has led to heightened tensions and conflicts over land.

Violence has escalated to such an extent that independent experts are calling the situation one of “emerging genocide.”

At least 24 Chabu have reportedly been killed by settlers in the past month, and many more have been forced to flee their homes.

In one incident, a Chabu mother was reportedly killed while caring for her young son, as he lay dying following an attack.

Friend --

Since I was elected as one of your representatives on Victoria City Council and the Capital Regional District Board three years ago, I have worked hard every day standing up for what we believe in. Together we've made real progress on important issues including:

  • Expanding parks, trails and greenways for walking and cycling;
  • Advocating for affordable housing and a fair deal for everyone;
  • Pursuing neighbourhood-appropriate development that respects Victoria's heritage;
  • Supporting community centres, seniors, libraries and the arts;
  • Providing cost-effective public services with open, accountable local government.

In the upcoming municipal election on Saturday November 15, I need your support to continue standing up for people and the planet.

If you think change is needed in our community and world, to build fairer relationships between people and more sustainable relationships with the land and waters that sustain us, please support my efforts for Re-Election by:

Urgent Action: Baka abused by anti-poaching squads

Baka ‘Pygmies’ are being forced from their ancestral homelands in the name of ‘conservation.’ Much of their land has been turned into ‘protected areas,’ to which they are given little or no access but where fee-paying game hunters are encouraged.

Wildlife officers and the soldiers that accompany them on patrols often harass, intimidate and sometimes torture Baka men and women and their neighbors.

Many Baka claim that friends and relatives have died as a result of the beatings.

WWF has a great deal of influence with the Cameroon government, and provides essential support and funding for these anti-poaching squads.

Dear Friend,

Even the “most trusted” person on television ... well, we just don’t know if he can be trusted anymore.

Peter Mansbridge, the host of CBC’s The National, has been exposed as a paid celebrity speaker for arguably the most powerful lobby group in Canada – the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

That’s right ... Peter Mansbridge and “Big Oil.”

The host of the most powerful hour on television is taking money from oil companies profiting from the tar sands, pipelines, and climate change.

And ... it gets much worse. That’s why your support is so important.

Can you make a gift of $25 or more to support rabble’s own team of independent, ethical journalists in Ottawa?

Parliament is back in session, and I hope that I can count on you to help me ensure that we have a top-notch team of independent and ethical journalists to really challenge Stephen Harper’s agenda.

We need to raise $25,000 to support our Parliamentary team in Ottawa – led by award-winning journalist Karl Nerenberg.

I want to thank you for being a cherished supporter of rabble.ca and reliable journalism.

Peru reacts to urgent calls to protect uncontacted tribe's land - News from Survival

Peru reacts to urgent calls to protect uncontacted tribe’s land

The Peruvian government has responded to urgent calls by Survival International and Amazon Indian organization FENAMAD to protect land inhabited by highly vulnerable uncontacted Indians.

Alarms were raised after a missionary was caught on camera handing clothes and other items to young members of the tribe, sparking fears that the Indians could contract fatal diseases which would wipe them out.

Over 13,000 Survival supporters have written to the Peruvian government urging it to immediately implement measures to ensure the Indians’ lands and lives are protected.

Peru’s Ministry of Culture has now responded by creating an emergency committee to manage the situation.

But the Ministry’s measure falls short of demands by local indigenous peoples.

FENAMAD is calling on the government to: expand the Madre de Dios Reserve (where the tribe have been seen recently) to include a further 1.2 million hectares of the uncontacted tribes’ ancestral homeland; employ and train a team of experts to man local guard-posts; and grant local guards the power of arrest to prevent illegal loggers and drug traffickers from invading the region.

Survival is supporting FENAMAD’s demands.

Please sign Survival’s petition urging the government to protect uncontacted tribes’ land here.

Uncontacted tribal peoples are the most vulnerable societies on the planet. Whole populations have been wiped out by diseases like flu and measles to which they have no resistance.

BCSEA E-News: Bring it Home - Think Globally, Vote Locally

BRING IT HOME - Think Globally, Vote Locally
By Guy Dauncey, BCSEA Founder and Communication Director

In BC, 1,660 people have the power locally to lead us to a green sustainable future — if they choose to

On Saturday November 15th everyone in BC over the age of 18 will have the opportunity to choose 1,600 new civic leaders (including School Board Trustees) from Sooke to Salmon Arm, from Chilliwack to Fort St John.

Once elected, these people will have the power to make critical local decisions for the next four years.

For the most part, they will be dedicated hard-working people who want to serve the public good—they just need you to tell them that the public good includes seriously addressing climate change. And the next four years are absolutely critical if we are to turn off the road to climate disaster and onto the road to a green, sustainable, resilient future.

This is why Saturday November 15th is so important. Municipal politicians can’t set federal or provincial policy, but they do have significant powers, and they can send a clear signal about the kind of actions people want, as Burnaby’s Mayor Derek Corrigan has recently done with his opposition to Kinder Morgan’s planned Trans Mountain Pipeline plowing its way though a Burnaby park.

On November 15th we can choose to elect mayors, councilors and regional directors who will set us on the road to a more green, sustainable future. But how can you tell what a candidate stands for?

To help you decide, BCSEA has gathered together the best local climate solutions. We have crafted them into five commitments to Sustainable Transportation, Sustainable Development, Greenest Buildings, A Sustainable Local Economy, and Healthy Food, Healthy Nature, and we have summarized them on two sheets, which can be downloaded here:

World Day for Decent Work – Events Worldwide

Brussels, 7 October 2014 (ITUC OnLine): Global Union Federation IndustriALL’s social media call to stop precarious work has reached over 1 million people in one of the most prominent actions on this year’s World Day for Decent Work. 113 events from 35 countries have already been registered on the special website 2014.wddw.org, starting with activities in the Philippines and concluding on the west coast of the Americas.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said “There have been an enormous variety of events today, in the type of activities being organised and also the wide range of topics, ranging from local struggles for justice and fairness at work through to solidarity actions on global issues such as the kafala system of forced labour in...

Climate Justice Resurfaces
Amidst New York’s Corporate Sharks

Patrick Bond

The world's largest ever march against climate change on Sunday (21 September) brought 400,000 people to the streets of New York, starting a lively parade at Central Park. On Tuesday, 120 of the world's political leaders -- notably not including the Chinese and Indians -- gathered 25 blocks away at the United Nations. The message they got from society was symbolized by the march route: instead of heading toward the UN building, the activists headed the other way, west. This directional choice reveals that hope for action on climate change comes not from the apparently paralysed heads of state and their corporate allies, who again consistently failed on the most powerful challenge society has ever...

Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples’ rights, has uncovered serious abuses of Baka “Pygmies” in southeast Cameroon, at the hands of anti-poaching squads supported and funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The Baka are being illegally forced from their ancestral homelands in the name of “conservation” because much of their land has been turned into “protected areas” – including safari-hunting zones.

Rather than target the powerful individuals behind organized poaching, wildlife officers and soldiers pursue Baka who hunt only to feed their families.

Watch Baka recount the abuse they suffer at the hands of anti-poaching squads supported by WWF:

Baka suffer abuse in the name of conservationIn southeast Cameroon, many Baka are being illegally forced from their ancestral homelands in the name of “conservation.”

They are accused of “poaching” because they hunt their food.

They face arrest and beatings, torture and death at the hand of anti-poaching squads supported by WWF.

Many Baka (such as the woman speaking in this video) in fact refer to anti-poaching squads as “dobi-dobi” (WWF), since they do not distinguish between WWF and Cameroon’s Ministry of Forests and Fauna.

New Trade Union Body Takes up the Challenge in the Arab World - ITUC OnLine

INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION ITUC OnLine 065/061014 New Trade Union Body Takes up the Challenge in the Arab World Brussels, 6 October 2014 (ITUC OnLine): A new sub-regional structure for trade unions in the Arab countries has been successfully launched with a founding Congress of the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC) in Amman. Houcine Abassi of the UGTT Tunisia, who was unanimously elected ATUC President, said in his opening remarks that "this historic development will enable the democratic and independent trade unions of the Arab World to confront the huge challenges facing workers in the region much more effectively and with great strength." The Congress, which was chaired by Mazen Maaytah, President of the Jordanian host organisation GFJTU, elected a 32-member General Council, with 30% of its seats reserved for women, and 10% for young workers. Mustapha Tlili was elected ATUC Executive Secretary at the Congress, which took place on 1 and 2 October....

Fiji to Finally Allow Visit by ILO Mission

Brussels, 6 October 2014 (ITUC OnLine): Fiji’s Commodore Frank Bainimarama, reinstalled as Prime Minister following a deeply flawed election last month, is set to allow an ILO mission into the country to probe labour rights violations. A 2012 ILO mission was expelled from the country when its members refused to allow the authorities to dictate how it would conduct its investigation.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said, “A last-minute concession from Fiji’s military rulers to agree to an ILO mission is intended to stop the UN body launching a Commission of Inquiry in November. The ‘deepening authoritarianism’, of which the ILO forewarned, is still very much the order of the day in Fiji, and we can...
