We are at 36,000 signers on our petition for proportional representation. Please sign up to collect 3 signatures today and be entered to win! (details below)
The past several years have shown us the devastating cost of winner-take-all voting in Canada. In 2015, we need to elect candidates to a majority of seats in Parliament who will vote YES to making every vote count.
Reaching 100,000 signers on our our petition - the Declaration of Voters' Rights - would send a powerful message at election time to the party leaders, the candidates and the media that Canadians want a fair and proportional voting system. Together, we can become a force too big to ignore.
To hit this goal, we need your help. We don’t have a big advertising budget behind us, and we don’t have the media in our pocket. What we do have is each of you - passionate supporters of democracy, with people-power!
To help us get closer to reaching our goal, we are running a Declaration Signers Contest. Sign up now to tell us you will collect a minimum of 3 new signatures by October 19, 2014. On October 19, exactly 365 days before the next federal election, we will draw 13 names and each winner can choose a prize. Our wonderful supporters have donated some valuable and heartfelt prizes to encourage us all - see below!
Please sign up today to collect 3 signatures.
70% of Canadians, ten commissions and assemblies, and decades of research supports proportional representation. It’s time to demand action from those who will fill the seats in Parliament in 2015!
No more 39% majorities. No more placebo ballots. Let’s make 2015 the last unfair election. Please sign up to help us get to 100,000 signatures today.
Thank you again for supporting Make Every Vote Count 2015!

Corporate Media Undermining Democracy in Canada
The word 'democracy' is being mentioned more often in Canada as Canadians see their democracy disappearing.
1. We do not have 'A Free Press' in Canada. All big Canadian media are owned by Corporate Canada and used as a Propaganda Machine to control our country, our society, and our resources and wealth. The Corporate Media controls Canada.
2. We no longer have a democracy in Canada. Democracy means 'government of the people'. In Canada we have 'government of the corporations'. The Corporations control Canada's top politicians and political parties. Our Politicians do not work for us or care about us, they work for Corporate Canada and do as they are told on all important issues. And if they don't, The Corporate Media will ruin them. That's why our health care system is breaking down, and why there is so much debt, poverty and environmental destruction. These things ARE the corporate agenda. The corporations are gaining fortunes by destroying our nation.
Corporate Canada owns virtually all Canadian media - every TV station, radio station, daily paper, big magazine, etc. is owned by one of a dozen major corporations. The media's jobs are to control the politicians and to control us. Canada's Media is an instrument of control. The media will destroy any politician who does not do as told, that is how they control our governments. Buying the media was one of the smartest things Corporate Canada has ever done - it gave them control of our Canada, one of the richest nations on earth.
The Media controls our elections: The Corporate media control the outcome of almost all of our elections. THEY choose who we will elect. They tell us who is good and bad; they tell us what the issues are, they create the 'scandals' and the news, and they move voters from Party A to Party B depending on which one will betray us 'the best'. It is almost impossible for a party to get elected without media support, and every politician knows that means 'Do as you are told or else.'
Lost Democracy: For many decades our Canada has been moved in directions set NOT by the people of Canada but by the Corporations of Canada. We - the people of Canada - are irrelevant. We do not matter. We have no power. They treat us like pathetic idiots and that's what they think we are.
For example - Health Care: Corporate Canada wants public Health Care destroyed so they can privatize it and make Billions from it. Our politicians are doing that job for them. All Canadians who suffer while waiting for an operation or for decent care are simply 'collateral damage'. And the media never mentions this because it is the truth, and Canadians must never be told the truth about these kinds of things.
The homeless roam our streets. Poverty and debt increase. We and our environment are increasingly poisoned. Our entire food supply is genetically contaminated ... all under corporate orders. Canada is on the road to complete and total disaster - but Corporate Canada is doing very well thank you.

Non Corporate Media from Canada
No Environmental Risk From Fracking
says Canada's Finance Minister
On Sept. 5, Finance Minister Joe Oliver told Canadians that the 175,000 Fracking wells already dug in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia do not create an environmental risk and have not contaminated any drinking water. Mr. Oliver made these comments after Nova Scotia decided to ban some forms of fracking in that province.
If you google 'fracking safety', you will see that NO ONE can say fracking is safe. Does Mr. Oliver have ANY proof that fracking is safe? Is Mr. Oliver speaking for the people of Canada or for Corporate Canada?
Here is a comment from Scientific American, May 9, 2011: 'A new study indicates that fracturing the Marcellus Shale for natural gas is contaminating private drinking water wells'. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fracking-for-natural-gas-pollutes-water-wells/ This is one of thousands of such comments available, and yet Mr. Oliver tells us that everything is perfectly safe and our Corporate Media reports it and asks for no proof.
Mr. Oliver said: "When a government steps back from the responsible development of its resources and that development doesn't create an environmental risk, there are economic consequences ..."
Mr. Oliver is either lying, or he has been completely misinformed about the issue of Fracking Safety. In either case, his comments support the ongoing Poisoning of Canada for Corporate Profit. And yet we see no criticism from Canada's Media or other politicians. Canadians should ask why our Media chooses to tell us that Fracking is safe.
At the news conference in Toronto on Thursday, Sept. 4, Mr. Oliver also stated: "Fracking has been going on in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan for over 50 years ... There've been 175,000 wells drilled using fracking and not a single case of drinkable water contamination.
As we say, Mr. Oliver's statements are either uninformed nonsense or outright lies ... and it is up to Canadians to react. Please contact your Member of Parliament and your favorite media. They should hear what citizens think.
The sad truth is that the Canadian Oil and Gas industry will happily poison you and your family in order to maximize their profits, and Regulators and Governments will stand back and let it happen.
Here is another example of 'no environmental damage': Alberta's Energy Resources Conservation Board concluded a well blowout near Innisfail ... that spewed 500 barrels of oily liquid over a field was caused by a company fracking a nearby well. No enforcement order was issued because the action didn’t violate regulations in place at the time.
Mr. Oliver ... this is pathetic. Canadians deserve better from you, our other politicians, and the media.

Friends,
Today more people took to the streets calling for climate action than on any other day in history. From New York City to Rio, London to Delhi -- we were everywhere.
This is what hope looks like:
(click here to see more photos)
On Tuesday, more world leaders will gather in New York to talk about climate action than have ever been assembled before -- 125 heads of state. They’ll be gathering with the knowledge that more people than ever are demanding action, not just words, and that their political future is on the line -- as well as the future of the planet.
We have a plan to bring that message to the top leadership of the UN inside Tuesday’s summit, with a hand-delivered message to top UN climate negotiators. If you stand with the hundreds of thousands of people who marched today around...

Amazon Indian 'army' takes on illegal loggers

Ka’apor Indians in the Amazon rainforest have formed an indigenous “army” to combat illegal invasions of their land, following the government’s failure to protect their territory.
The Ka’apor men track down and detain gangs of illegal loggers, set fire to their trucks, and confiscate their chainsaws.
Images of their latest expedition show the Ka’apor, armed with bows and arrows and wooden batons, detaining one group of loggers in their territory in the north-eastern Brazilian Amazon.
One Ka’apor spokesman said, “We have decided to take on the loggers because nobody else is helping us. We are doing what the authorities should be doing.”
Illegal loggers have long subjected the Ka’apor to violent attacks, and are devastating the forest on which the tribe, and the neighbouring Awá Indians, depend for their survival.

The Harper Conservatives just ratified the secretive and extreme China-Canada FIPA investors' deal.
Harper wants to hide this terrible decision from Canadians, but with your help we can blanket key vulnerable Conservative ridings with radio and newspaper ads to make sure voters hear about this, and Harper pays a steep price in the 2015 election.

Harper is trying to sneak this under the radar – making a quiet announcement on a Friday afternoon – because he knows FIPA is deeply unpopular with people across the country, including his own MPs, Conservative donors, and swing voters he needs in the 2015 election.
Canadians deserve to know, and if Harper won’t tell them, we will.
While we work with partners to review the legal options, we want to make sure key voters know that the Harper Conservatives ratified FIPA behind our backs, and set the stage to make Harper pay at the ballot box in the next election.
Radio ads are one of the fastest ways to get information out to the people Harper cares about most - his political base and the swing voters he’s trying to keep in the dark.
Help us make sure that voters from coast to coast to coast know that Harper just put China’s corporate profits ahead of your democratic and economic rights. Please chip in $20 now to help fund our hard-hitting radio ads.

Exactly ten years after the Botswana government claimed there were “no plans to mine anywhere inside the reserve", a $4.9bn diamond mine has opened in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, home to the Bushmen. Despite the lies, conservation organizations continue to laud President Khama for his environmental credentials and turn a blind eye to his human rights abuses.

Did the BC Liberal government just bluff on that forty-dollar a day voucher plan or do they really want to have THAT battle over public education now?
It was telling that one of the earliest responses to the announcement came from a former top ranking BC Liberal. “Hmm. Did BC govt just take the first $40 per day step towards a voucher system for public education?” asked former Attorney General, Geoff Plant on Twitter.
Yes! Was the resounding answer from those who know what a voucher school system is.
If you don’t know about vouchers here’s a quick explanation. A voucher system is one of several in the ‘school choice’ basket. I use quotes here because ‘school choice’ is a codified term that is synonymous with privatized, typically non-union schools.
The government issues parents a voucher worth a specific amount of funding towards their child’s education. Parents take this voucher, shop around and find a school that suits them. Sometimes the voucher is worth the full price of admission but sometimes it’s only a portion of the school’s fee. The underlying idea here is that in order to ‘stay in business’ schools must compete with each other to attract parents who control the vouchers. Think of it as a B.C. government gift card you can use anywhere, including, according to Finance Minister Mike de Jong, places that aren’t actually schools. And if you haven’t done the math, $40 per day is $7,440 over a 186 day school year.
Here’s why this is not a great idea.
School choice systems lead to further segregating kids by class, ethnicity and ability. One reason for this outcome is basic human nature – we tend to be drawn to people who have the same sensibilities and views that we do. Another reason is the biases we bring to decision-making like stereotypes we hold about others or about a school or neighbourhood.
Public education in Canada was built on the idea of equity; school as the one place where regardless of ethnicity or income, all students had the same opportunities. It’s a lofty goal and one that shamefully failed Aboriginal students. But as income inequality increases it’s a worthy goal that should be renewed not abandoned at the whim of a provincial government.
Modern public schools also play an important role in promoting social cohesion. In Canada that means enhancing cross-cultural understanding by breaking down bigotry through the lived experience of students attending school as equals.
The U.S. does not share Canada’s history of public education. The rise of charter and voucher schools in the U.S. occurred, in part, as a segregationist response to the desegregation of schools in the 1960s and within a long-standing libertarian culture deeply suspect of government-run school systems. Even today, influenced by far-right economists like Milton Friedman, many U.S. law-makers do not believe government should play a central role in educating the nation’s children and most certainly not by unionized teachers. I suspect there are B.C. Liberals who feel the same way.
How we got here: a decade of underfunding, legislative changes and bad PR
Once elected, Gordon Campbell quickly let it be known he had no intention of responsibly stewarding B.C.’s respected public school system. Like Mike Harris in Ontario, Campbell implemented shock and awe funding cuts that left school boards scrambling, teachers stretched thin and parents rallying in the streets.

In just weeks, parliament will vote on a bill that would be a critical step towards freeing our Members of Parliament from the iron-fisted control by Prime Ministers and party leaders.
This could be the best moment we have before the next election to see real steps towards democratic reform. Let’s support giving our MPs the power to do their jobs and more freely represent us.
In just two weeks, parliament will vote on Michael Chong’s Reform Act, a bill that will give MPs more freedom to stand up for us, the people they represent. The bill is designed to challenge the growing centralization of power in the Prime Minister’s Office and party leaders’ offices, and - incredibly - it’s received support from MPs of all political stripes, but we’re going to need your help to make sure they work together across party lines to get it passed.Nobody who runs for office wants to be bullied into voting for things they or their constituents disagree with. But the realities of party discipline, and the iron-fisted control exercised by party leaders often make MPs feel powerless to represent their own constituents without fear of reprisals. [1,2]

National Liberation and Bolshevism Reexamined:
A View from the Borderlands
Eric Blanc
A view from the Czarist empire's borderlands obliges us to rethink many long-held assumptions about the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, as well as the development of Marxist approaches to national liberation, peasant struggle, permanent revolution, and the emancipation of women.
The following paper analyzes the socialist debates on the national question up through 1914. I argue that an effective strategy of anti-colonial Marxism was first put forward by the borderland socialists, not the Bolsheviks. Lenin and his comrades lagged behind the non-Russian Marxists on this crucial issue well into the Civil War -- and this political weakness helps explain the Bolshevik failure to build roots among dominated peoples.
Consequently, the...
