Costco's secret contribution to climate change

Canada’s boreal forests are being flushed down the toilet and retail giant Costco’s Kirkland brand is one of the worst offenders.
It’s time for Costco to clean up its act.
A,
Toilet paper is destroying Canada’s vast and majestic old-growth boreal forests, worsening climate change, endangering wildlife, and affecting hundreds of Indigenous communities across the country. And there’s no good reason this should be happening.
According to a report from our friends at the NRDC and Stand.earth, Costco’s Kirkland brand is one of the worst offenders. It's cutting down a million trees a year from the boreal forest -- just to be flushed away.
Toilet paper is Costco's biggest selling item so committing to stop boreal forest sourcing, and more recycled content, would save millions of trees a year.

Wall Street Can’t Fix the Environment -- and Neither Can Bay Street
Matthew Corbeil
On December 16, 2019, a few dozen members of Canada’s business, academic and government elite met in Toronto at the invitation of the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). They were there to officially launch the Energy Future Forum (EFF), "a new pan-Canadian initiative to develop policy answers that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the economy." Co-founded by three of Canada’s largest corporations -- RBC, Suncor Energy and Hydro-Québec -- alongside the charitable Ivey Foundation and the think-tank Public Policy Forum, the EFF’s leaders struck an optimistic tone, even as the climate picture has grown increasingly bleak. As RBC CEO David McKay explained, while climate change was "one of the most pressing issues of our age," he was certain that he and all his bank’s "stakeholders" could "embrace the challenge and show Canadians that innovation can achieve measurable progress on climate change and help create a clean, prosperous economy."
The EFF is strategizing for the long-term, aiming to "map out...

BREAKING: Teck Frontier Mine cancelled and police move in on Mohawk land defenders

Friends,
I have good news and bad news.
The good news is that last night, Teck Resources Ltd. pulled its application to build the Frontier mine -- the largest tar sands mine ever proposed.1 This is a huge win and it means that millions of tonnes of carbon will be left in the ground and that Canada has a chance to turn the corner on climate.
This never would have happened without people-powered action led by our friends at Indigenous Climate Action. We are so grateful to the countless people like you who took action to stop this project. In the letter announcing its decision, Teck made it clear that it was only walking away from the project because public opinion in Canada is shifting against massive fossil fuel projects.2 This is thanks to the relentless organizing of Indigenous peoples, youth and thousands of others across the country. And, this is our chance to get Canada moving on a Green New Deal.
Here’s the bad news. As I’m writing this, Ontario police are arresting Mohawk land defenders at the Tyendinaga rail blockade that went up nearly three weeks ago in solidarity...

For an Internationalist Perspective in North America
An interview with André Frappier of Québec solidaire
The 2018 national assembly election in Québec marked a breakthrough for the Left. While a right-wing coalition won the most votes, the election’s biggest surprise was the unprecedented success of the left-wing, pro-independence party Québec solidaire (Solidarity Québec, QS). It broke out of its traditional base in Montréal, doubled its share of the popular vote, and tripled its seat count. With 16 per cent of the vote and 10 seats in the Québec parliament, this was the best result for the party since its establishment in 2006.
The party’s 2018 platform was wide-ranging and radical. It included, among other things, an aggressive program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to renewable energy; massive investments in public transportation and infrastructure spending; free public education from preschool through university; strengthening and expanding the universal health program, particularly the creation of a universal drug insurance plan; a universal legal aid plan; an expansion of workers’ rights and union power; the replacement...

A,
Have you seen this? Our thirst for almond milk is literally killing our bees.
There’s an easy way to stop this -- get almond farmers to ditch toxic bee-killing pesticides. We have a plan to do exactly that, but we can’t do it without you.
Can you chip in to protect our bees?

Why Public Transit Should Be Free For All
Davide Mastracci
Drivers in Canada often complain of a "war on cars" that is supposedly being waged in cities throughout the country. This metaphorical war is non-existent, but that’s unfortunate because such a war would be justified, given the severity of the environmental and social crises we face.
As it stands, there are two commuting classes in Canada: drivers and everyone else. And throughout much of the country, the needs of drivers are prioritized. That not only harms our environment, but it also holds back the most marginalized citizens, who often can’t afford cars, from fully participating in our economy, politics and culture.
The problem is rooted in funding. According to a recent study published in Transport Policy, insufficient public transit funding has left one million Canadians suffering from "transport poverty," which means they don’t have access to public transportation that meets their needs. University of Toronto researcher Steven Farber says this can negatively affect people’s socio-economic status by impacting their ability to access goods...

No public money to the Coastal GasLink Pipeline!

Friends,
As thousands across the country take to the streets in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en land defenders and hereditary chiefs, a federal government crown corporation— Export Development Canada (EDC)— is considering handing over millions of dollars in public money to the very project that sparked this resistance.1
Export Development Canada has a track record of financing projects that violate Indigenous rights and disregard climate science. In 2018, they were essential to the federal government’s controversial buy-out of the TMX pipeline. Now, they could be committing an undisclosed amount of money to the Coastal GasLink Pipeline as early as February 26th.
Sign a message to Export Development Canada, Minister of International Trade Mary Ng, and Justin Trudeau to tell them this is unacceptable.
Justin Trudeau has built his political legacy on promises of reconciliation and climate leadership, yet has lived up to neither. Not only is he allowing militarized RCMP officers to enter unceded Wet’suwet’en territory to enforce an illegal injunction, he is also turning a blind-eye to the possibility of a crown corporation publicly financing the project.
Right now our...

‘Poorly Behaved Nurses’ and Inequality in SA’s Healthcare Sector
Salimah Valiani
Nurses in South Africa get a bad rap. Whether by journalists, politicians, academics, patients or bosses, nurses -- particularly in the public sector -- are criticized, vilified and scrutinized. Little consideration is given to the trying context in which they work.
Nurses hold 81 per cent of filled professional positions in the public healthcare sector and carry the bulk of responsibility of paid care in a country that in 2019 achieved "the most unhealthy nation in the world" status in the Indigo Wellness Index. The index ranks countries according to measures of blood pressure, blood glucose, obesity, depression, happiness, alcohol use, tobacco use, exercise, healthy life expectancy and government spending on healthcare.
The last on this list -- government spending on healthcare -- is a key link I make to the bad rap given to nurses in a recently published article, "Public Healthcare Spending in South Africa and the Impact on Nurses: 25 years of democracy?"
The article is part of...

Indigenous Resistance Shakes the Canadian State
John Clarke
In early February, the RCMP, Canada’s colonial police force, raided the land defender camps of the Wet’suwet’en people in British Columbia, in order to clear the way for pipeline construction. Clearly, none of the political decision makers responsible for this repressive action ever imagined that it would spark a powerful wave of solidarity actions across Canada. There have been ongoing protests and rallies but the focus has been on the tactic of economic disruption, most notably by blockading the railway network. If the attack on the Wet’suwet’en was driven by the profit needs of extractive capitalism, the resistance that has emerged has targeted the flow of goods and services as the most effective form of counter-attack.
In October of 2018, the provincial government of British Columbia approved the building of a 670 km pipeline to bring liquified natural gas from northern BC to a $40-billion export plant, to be constructed in Kitimat. In BC, the New Democratic Party (NDP) is in power, so it was shameful...

Friends,
The Trudeau cabinet will make their decision on the Teck Frontier Mine any day now.
We're hearing more stories everyday about divisions within the Liberal caucus around approving this project. It seems like the cabinet might be close to rejecting Teck. But we know that the fossil fuel industry has our politicians on speed dial, and they're going to do everything in their power to bulldoze ahead with the Teck Mine.
That's why we're taking action to make sure our voices can't be ignored. We're flooding the Trudeau cabinet's offices with faxes showing their faces from the future. Take action now and send your fax with just one click.
We want Trudeau and his cabinet to look to the future and imagine 2050 if they approve the Teck Frontier Mine. Approving Teck — the largest tar sands mine ever proposed — would set off a global climate bomb and devastate communities around the world. See for yourself:
Rejecting Teck is an opportunity to choose...

Neither Cure nor Prevention, but Sheer Punishment:
The IHRA’s Definition of Anti-Semitism
Michelle Weinroth
Anti-Semitism is a grave matter; its mere utterance conjures unspeakable horrors -- atrocities typically tied to the Holocaust, but also to the longstanding racist persecution of Jews in Europe. Widely known in Western culture, invoked with immeasurable awe, whether in common parlance or academic discourse, anti-Semitism has become a household word and sound definitions of it abound.
So of what use is a new definition, the kind adopted in 2016 by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)? Officially intended for policy makers and other administrative bodies as a tool with which to combat the scourge of anti-Semitism, the definition, of which the veritable purpose is to suppress criticism of Israel, has sparked debate in City councils across Canada, from Vancouver and Calgary to Montreal. In all three city councils, the motion to adopt the IHRA definition was either defeated or shelved.
A primary author of the IHRA definition, Kenneth Stern, has strongly cautioned against its concrete application by political...

Friends,
Blockades in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en land defenders are becoming more powerful everyday. Thanks to demonstrators, CN and VIA have indefinitely cancelled train service across the country.1 Empty cargo ships with no where to go are piling up at Vancouver’s ports.2 And Justin Trudeau was forced to cancel a trip overseas to respond to the rapidly escalating situation.3
In the midst of all this, the Liberal caucus is showing more and more signs that they might be ready to reject the Teck Frontier Mine.4
But, we know that it’s in these moments when Big Oil pulls out all the stops. That’s why we’re doubling down to make sure Trudeau and his key cabinet ministers can’t ignore the moral consequences of their decision. Take a minute to send them a fax demanding that they reject the largest tar sands mine ever proposed.
Last week, we flooded Trudeau and his cabinet ministers’ phone lines with over 1,000 calls. This week, it’s time to ramp up the pressure. We want to flood their offices with images of them from 2050. We want to...
