Indigenous nations negotiated numerous treaties with the United States that included land transfers and monetary compensation, but the remaining Indigenous territories have steadily shrunk due to direct federal appropriation by various means as well as through government failure to meet its obligation to protect Indigenous landholdings as required under treaties. The U.S. government has acknowledged some of these claims and has offered monetary compensation. However, since the upsurge of Indian rights movements in the 1960s, Indigenous nations have...

BREAKING: TPP finalized–now the real fight begins

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

This is an emergency. A few days ago we called on you to tell Trade Minister Ed Fast to reject the TPP’s Internet censorship scheme. Well, he didn’t listen.

This morning, he sat on stage with Trade Ministers from the 11 other Trans-Pacific Partnership countries to announce they had completed the largest and most secretive agreement in the history of the world.1

r1

Dear friends,

We’ve been thinking long and hard about how to make the big announcement we’ve been hinting at for the past month. After much consideration, we decided a simple invitation was all we needed.

This is an invitation for you to step up. To consider risking arrest in a gentle but serious series of actions designed to welcome the next Prime Minister, whoever he is, by calling on him to change the direction that Canada has been headed.

You already know the facts. It’s a pivotal moment on our planet -- 2015 has been defined by the wildfires, floods and record breaking temperatures that made headlines across Canada and around the globe this summer.

It’s also a pivotal moment in this country’s history. We’re in the midst of an election where no political party with a chance of forming government has a plan to do what scientists say...

Nearly 60,000 global citizens stood in solidarity with US Vice President Joe Biden, the First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafzai, Pearl Jam, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, and many others to launch the #GlobalGoals. The collective action of global citizens, artists, activists and world leaders set a precedent for monumental change over the course of the next fifteen years - and because of you, 92 million lives are set to be affected.

Click here to relive every minute of the #GlobalCitizen Festival and see the impact you’re making as a global citizen. Read more: 93 million lives affected
