Corporate pressure over TTIP talks force EU to drop regulations on hormone-damaging chemicals
The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the US-EU Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) undermine the ability of democratically-elected governments to regulate in the public interest on a wide range of issues, notably when those regulations impact the corporations that profit from the harmful practices in question.

Friends,
Just over four years ago, we were getting ready for the Washington protests that helped accelerate the Keystone pipeline fight. A week out I was nervous but excited — I knew that our movement was ready to take a new step. And that’s how it turned out: enough people showed up outside the White House to constitute the country’s biggest civil disobedience action in a long time. It got the ball rolling.
Now you’ve got the same chance in Canada. In the wake of the sweeping Liberal victory, it’s time to welcome the new government to office—and make sure that they realize there’s no time to waste. Climate Welcome is a reminder that unless the tar sands stops expanding, Canada simply can’t play a constructive role in solving the world’s climate problems.
The movement has matured a lot since those days four years ago. It’s broad and diverse, led...

Surge in Portuguese Left Bloc Support Puts Socialist Party on the Spot
Dick Nichols
Will Portugal finally see the end of austerity as administered for four years by the right-wing coalition (known as Portugal Ahead) composed of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) and Democratic and Social Centre-People's Party (CDS-PP)?
In the country's legislative October 4 elections this governing alliance, running for the first time as a single ticket called Portugal Ahead (except on the Azores), won the elections, but with only 38.4 per cent of the vote (down from 50.4 per cent at the 2011 national election). Of the 5.4 million Portuguese who voted, 739,000 turned their back on the outgoing government, leaving it with only 107 seats in the 230-seat parliament (down 25). As...

Good Riddance and Old Quandaries:
Two Views from Quebec on the Canadian Federal Election
The recent Canadian federal election results have taken most commentators and social activists by surprise. If the anti-Harper sentiment amongst two-thirds of the population had been clear enough for more than a year, very few had on their radar a Liberal majority outcome (even given the notoriety of the electoral distortions of the single-member plurality electoral system in Canada). The collapse of the social democratic NDP back to traditional base support levels in terms of the popular vote was equally unexpected.
Not surprisingly, post-election commentary has focused on how much the Liberals will depart from the core neoliberal framework of the Conservative government, although a huge number of small and symbolic...

Working For Each Other, Working For Ourselves:
A Revolutionary Public Service Worker-Organizer Summit
On October 3rd 2015, the Industrial Workers of the World’s Toronto General Membership Branch hosted “Working For Each Other, Working For Ourselves: A Revolutionary Public Service Worker-Organizer Summit,” an event which brought together grassroots workplace organizers from around North America.
A major component of today's economy, the public services are often hit first and hard by austerity and other cut backs. As workers, we need to organize ourselves to fight these battles in the community centres, grocery stores, bedrooms and office towers where we work for the benefit of other people.

Hey PAOV,“There is hope in dreams, imagination, and in the courage of those who wish to make those dreams a reality.” - Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine
Before the creation of a vaccine in 1955, polio was a devastating disease that affected millions of people, especially children, every year. Over the past thirty years, political ambition and increased funding for vaccines and treatment has led to an extraordinary milestone: the world is now 99.9% polio free.
Today is World Polio Day and we’re too close to eradicating this devastating disease to stop now. Tweet at Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom to ensure that they...
