Dear PAOV,
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trip to DC this week was designed to be low-key and, above all else, normal. But in some ways - thanks to you - this trip was anything but.
Netanyahu’s trip had a clear aim: mending ties with progressives. And with good reason. In just the past year, Netanyahu has tried to march the U.S. into war with Iran, race-baited in order to win re-election, and, at every opportunity, trampled on the civil and human rights of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, inside Israel, and in the diaspora.

Friends,
There are times when words are hard to come by, and when you find them they feel inadequate.
I’m writing you from France, with a heavy heart. Following Friday's attacks in Paris, the mood here is tense. People are angry, and many are afraid. Many of our staff members are in Paris to get ready for the climate talks in a couple of weeks, and they are feeling the pain of this moment sharply.
I am heartbroken -- for the lives lost in Paris, and for those lost in Beirut and Baghdad, which also suffered devastating attacks late last week. Clearly the world is hurting in many places right now.
As we’ve struggled to find the right words and the right response to Friday night’s attacks, one thing rises to the top for me:
The upcoming Paris Climate Summit is, in a sense, a peace summit -- perhaps the most important peace summit that...

ACTION ALERT: Speak up for the most abused animals on earth
Would you spend ten minutes to help hundreds of millions of animals?
It's hard to relate to
chickens. They look nothing like us, and many of us have never even met one.
Yet, believe it or not, chickens are every bit as sentient as the dogs and
cats we know and...

From Greece to Portugal to Corbyn's Labour Party:
Openings and Closures on the European Left
After decades of uninterrupted neoliberal austerity across Europe, in recent years a new left alternative has begun to take shape. Whereas generations had turned to Latin America and other parts of the global capitalist periphery for signs of hope for a viable socialist alternative, today working people have once again turned to confront the capitalist classes in their own countries, and to challenge the vision of a neoliberal Europe with a reinvigorated left politics that seeks to build social movements by working both within and outside the state.
Three of the most prominent examples have been Syriza's meteoric rise in Greece -- the only radical left government to do so despite the...

Leading the legal fight for animal protection
Dear PAOV,
Animals got their day in court this week.
On Monday, law professor Peter Sankoff and I went to the Supreme Court of Canada to represent Animal Justice in a groundbreaking appeal. We spoke words that had never before been heard in court: "Animal Justice is here to represent the interests of animals."
