Will Justin Trudeau Change Canadian Policy in the Middle East?

Will Justin Trudeau Change Canadian Policy in the Middle East?

Gregory Shupak

The election of Canada's Liberal Party is likely to mean a shift away from the hyper-belligerent tone Stephen Harper's Conservative Party used on issues pertaining to Middle East policy, but few concrete changes can be expected to take place. All signs point to the incoming government continuing to play a key supporting role in U.S.-led imperialism in the Middle East.

That the Liberals intend to approach international affairs in an aggressive manner is made clear in their platform, which accuses the Conservatives of "weakening Canada's military," criticises Harper's government for providing the Canadian armed forces with supposedly inadequate funding, and promises to maintain the military's budget at current levels. The platform vows...

The Prime Minister needs to make a choice.

r1

Friends,

On the day that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was sworn in, he published an open letter stating that Canadians “need to have faith in their government’s honesty and willingness to listen.”

Over the course of the last four days, I joined hundreds of courageous people from across the country, including students, Indigenous leaders, grandparents, doctors, lawyers, mothers and everyone in between, who sat in to call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to walk his talk on climate change.

It was, bar none, the politest act of civil disobedience I’ve ever been to. We were willing to be arrested because it’s critical to show this government that real climate action is important enough to take that risk. But we also showed up with gifts -- including five solar panels that the Prime Minister declined to accept. (Make...

Trudeau government backs Energy East, supports tar sands expansion

On the same day that US President Barack Obama rejected the proposed 830,000 barrel per day Keystone XL pipeline, highlighting that approving the pipeline would undermine efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the government of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came out in support of the larger 1.1 million barrel per day...

Climate Crisis and Climate Realism

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 29 October 2015

Climate Crisis and Climate Realism

Mass migration, civil war, banditry, imperial military adventures -- all these are current responses to the climate crisis. These and other impending dislocations from climate change intersect with the already-existing crises of poverty and violence in “catastrophic convergence” that demands immediate action and longer-term social change. What is the relation between the reformist project of short-term emissions redactions and a longer-term struggle to create a sustainable political economy?

Christian Parenti, journalist and professor at New York University, discusses these and other questions in a public lecture that draws from his current research into economic and environmental history and upon his book Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence which involved years of travel and reportage in conflict zone...

BREAKING: Keystone XL got rejected -- and we were sitting in for Day 2 of Climate Welcome

r1

Friends,

Today, as we gathered on the territories of the Algonquin peoples for the second day of Climate Welcome, we received the phenomenal news that President Obama has rejected the Keystone XL pipeline. This decision come after four years of people taking to the streets and taking action out on the land. They risked arrest outside the White House and staged numerous bold, courageous demonstrations to confront the President about the climate and Indigenous rights impacts of the KXL pipeline.

In his rejection speech, President Obama told us that he’s dedicated to making the United States a “a global leader when it comes to taking serious action to fight climate change,” and that approving the Keystone XL pipeline would drastically “undercut that leadership.”

Obama also mentioned that our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was disappointed to hear about this decision....

THE ASSASSINATION COMPLEX - SECRET MILITARY DOCUMENTS EXPOSE THE INNER WORKINGS OF OBAMAS DRONE WARS

ARTICLE №1 OF 8THE DRONE PAPERSJeremy Scahill
Oct. 15 2015, 4:57 a.m.

From his first days as commander in chief, the drone has been President Barack Obama’s weapon of choice, used by the military and the CIA to hunt down and kill the people his administration has deemed — through secretive processes, without indictment or trial — worthy of execution. There has been intense focus on the technology of remote killing, but that often serves as a surrogate for what should be a broader examination of the state’s power over life and death.
