The Politics of the Right and the Dilemmas of the Left
The 2016 Socialist Register
The Preface to the 2016 Socialist Register, The Politics of the Right, includes the following paragraphs:
"There is a great strategic importance in a sober analysis of the strength of new right today, and the impasse of the left emerges here as a central concern. In confronting almost everywhere different permutations of right wing populism gaining further ground in this phase of neoliberalism, and the increasing state authoritarianism seen in new modes of surveillance and policing, we need to recognize the complicity of liberal and social democratic political agents in this. Both this and the limited political capacities of the radical left have provide space for the rise of...

BREAKING: Were risking arrest outside the Prime Mini

Friends,
Right now, I’m risking arrest outside the Prime Minister’s residence with dozens of other people from across Canada to demand a freeze on the tar sands expansion.
I’m nervous, unsure about how this day will unfold, and, surprisingly, I’m also full of hope. I have hope that the new leader of Canada will carve out a different path for this country than the one we’ve seen over the last 10 years -- one that honours the rights of Indigenous peoples and respects the limits of our climate. This is the first day that Justin Trudeau has woken up as Prime Minister of Canada, and we’re making sure that we get to his doorstep before Big Oil does.
But I’ll be honest: I’m also afraid. I’m afraid of what will happen if Prime Minister Trudeau doesn’t hear our call. More toxic oil poisoning our sacred waters, more wildfires blazing...

TransCanada's KXL manoeuvre puts new emphasis on Energy East, second export terminal
Even though it is very likely that TransCanada has sought to suspend its application for its proposed 830,000 barrels per day Keystone XL pipeline in order to stave off an imminent veto by US president Barack Obama, we can rightly celebrate that the project continues to be mired in controversy and delays.

Canada’s Election: Voters Defeat Harper,
but Elect Another Trudeau
Richard Fidler
Canada's federal election October 19 was effectively a plebiscite of voter opinion on the decade-long rule by the ultra-neoliberal Conservatives (Tories) led by Stephen Harper. With some 70 per cent of the electorate declaring for "change" in successive polling, the overriding issue was which of the main opposition parties, the New Democratic Party (NDP) or the Liberals, would emerge as the party best situated to replace the Tories.
The Official Opposition NDP entered the campaign in August with high hopes, leading the polls, buoyed by its recent victory in the Tory heartland of Alberta and enjoying new support for its principled opposition to the Tories’ repressive "anti-terror" bill C-51. But on October 19...

Sounding the TTIP alarm across the European Union
There is a great deal of opposition to ISDS in TTIP; so much so, that many think either ISDS will have to come out of the deal or be radically modified, or it will be defeated in Europe. Already, the European Commission has proposed ISDS ‘reforms’ to TTIP that would set up a new European Investment Court that...

Dear Friends,
Late last night we got some big news that TransCanada asked the United States government to “pause” its review of the Keystone XL pipeline. In response, my friend Bill McKibben said that “clearly TransCanada has lost and they recognize that. It’s one of the great victories for this movement in decades.”
For me, it was a reminder that four years ago, the fight to stop this pipeline in the United States was fired up by a historic sit-in at the White House. Now we have a chance to do something similar and make history in Canada.
Hundreds of people have already told us that they’re coming to Ottawa for the Climate Welcome sit-ins. Over four days people from coast to coast will risk arrest to call on Canada’s new Prime Minister to take bold climate action by freezing tar sands...

Hey rabble readers!
Welcome to a Harper-free Canada! The election on October 19 brought the return of a Liberal majority to Canada's Parliament and a new prime minister who has lots of promises to keep. What kind of change will a Trudeau government bring? Harper may be gone, but how can we deal with the lingering effects of Harperism? Catch up on all the election news from the week on rabble and read our analysis of what progressives can expect from our new federal government.

CETA: The Canadian people's voice in Europe
In the last several years, Canadian business groups and their lobbyists have been making the transatlantic journey to promote CETA. This week, the Council of Canadians is launching an eight-country, two-month European tour to bring the citizens’ point of view to the table with European leaders.
