The Struggle over Site C Dam and the Peace River
The energy from Site C is not needed: After 28 days of hearings and review of 28,000 pages of documentation, the Joint Review Panel concluded that BC Hydro has failed to prove that we need Site C. Further, they emphasized that because there are significant adverse effects, justification for the project must rest on an unambiguous need for the power.
Site C is going to cost you money - a lot of money: "BC Hydro currently estimates that Site C Dam will cost $8.8 billion" and "BC Hydro projects losing $800 million in the first 4 years of operation." (Report of the Joint Review Panel, Site C Clean Energy Project, BC Hydro, May 1, 2014).

As we write this, more than 200,000 litres of heavy oil mixed with diluents is flowing uncontrollably down the North Saskatchewan River.
There are many parallels between last week’s heavy oil spill from a Husky Energy pipeline in Saskatchewan and the Enbridge pipeline rupture in Kalamazoo Michigan almost exactly six years ago.

Turkey: Atlanticism versus Rabiism
Sungur Savran
The dramatic events that unfolded in Turkey on the night of 15 to 16 July have been excessively confined to the internecine struggle of two different Islamic currents, that of the AKP under the iron fist of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and its latter day nemesis the Gulen fraternity. This is misleading in two senses. On the one hand, it hides from view the distinct possibility or even more and more certitude that other tendencies within the Turkish armed forces (the TSK in its Turkish acronym) were involved in the planning if not the final execution of the failed putsch. On the other, it prevents us from seeing the more fundamental contradiction that besets Turkey today -- a contradiction that...

Hey Paov, Around the world, schools are being targeted by extremist groups hostile to education. Why? Because kids who are out of school are more vulnerable to their manipulation and do not have the tools to fight back.
Kids in emergencies face real threats to their safety and well-being. Disturbing new statistics show rates of child marriage among refugee girls have more than doubled from...

We cant let another pipeline spill

Friends,
Last week, we witnessed another tragic pipeline leak in Saskatchewan. Over 200,000 litres of oil leaked into the North Saskatchewan River – a main source of drinking water – causing a local state of emergency in Prince Albert.1
This spill affirms what we know to be true – that pipelines are never 100% safe. That’s why we need people across Canada to stand together against the Kinder Morgan pipeline.
Over the past two weeks people all along the Kinder Morgan route have made it clear: the risk of this pipeline to the water, land and climate are just too high.
But, they need our help. They need people across Canada to let the Prime Minister know that climate leadership means keeping dirty tar sands oil in the ground.

Postal Workers Confront Canada Post:
The Struggle Continues in 2016
Evert Hoogers, Donald Swartz, Rosemary Warskett
A major confrontation is in the making at Canada Post. On the one hand, post office management is seeking to extract a series of far ranging concessions from its workers. On the other, those workers and their union, Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), are not simply prepared to resist these demands, but are determined to use the opportunity to negotiate a new collective agreement to pursue an agenda that advances equality within the workplace and the expansion and renewal of vital public services. The importance of this struggle lies in the fact that its outcome will be of enormous significance not only to the lives of postal workers,...

Before ’68:
The Left, Activism and Social Movements in the Long 1960s
Ernest Tate and Phil Hearse present Revolutionary Activism in the 1950s and 1960s.
Ernest Tate's memoir is an important contribution to the history of the left in Britain and Canada during a unique period. It's a political life of Ernest Tate's life as a socialist during the fifteen year period from 1955 to 1970. In volume one, he tells us about his arrival from Toronto in 1955 as a working-class immigrant from Northern Ireland and about how he quickly became engaged in radical politics.
