Dear PAOV,

Dareen Tatour is a Palestinian poet and citizen of Israel who was arrested nine months ago in the middle of the night. Her crime? Writing a poem and posting it on Youtube.

The outrageousness of Tatour’s imprisonment is matched only by how tragically routine her arrest is. Tatour is one of over 400 Palestinians1 arrested by Israel since last fall for political statements on social media. Palestinian cultural workers, both citizens of Israel and residents of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, are under attack for speaking the truth of their lives.

From the Tar Sands to ‘Green Jobs’?
Work and Ecological Justice

Prepared for: Confronting Leviathan: Struggles to Stop the Tar Sands

Greg Albo and Lilian Yap

The ecological and social implications of climate change have -- or should -- become a central parameter for all discussions of work and capitalism. It is generally agreed that reliance on the burning of fossil fuels as the pre-eminent energy source for production and consumption over the history of capitalism is the critical factor in the ruinous greenhouse gas emissions triggering global warming, which would become irreversible if the earth's atmosphere were brought to a ‘tipping-point’. The leading scientific estimates project that a rise in average global temperatures of 2°C (and now often just 1.5°C) is the threshold...

This week, Canada Post issued a 72-hour lockout notice to 50,000 posties, as bargaining disagreements between the Crown corporation and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) continued to make headlines. While pay equity and pensions are front of mind during this round of bargaining, the Canada Post labour dispute has roots that stretch back years. Learn more about the issues driving the dispute to get context on recent developments, in our continuing coverage.
