China Sucked Deeper Into World Financial Vortex and Vice Versa, as BRICS Sink Fast

Patrick Bond

On Monday November 30, the Chinese currency -- the yuan -- will join the dollar, euro, pound and yen as the world's official reserve currencies, as recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Are we reaching the fabled new era of multipolarity, and will it bring stability to a chaotic world economy -- "a win-win result for China and the world," as the People's Bank of China claims? Or instead, will this herald the amplification of extreme uneven development, worsening financial crises, and the abuse of Chinese economic surpluses, yet again, for the purpose of bailing out the corrupt, fragile world financial institutions and their elites?

In that...

End-of-Year Events

Hello all,

To the people we recently met at the Activist Assembly, I hope you enjoyed that event and are stoked for future political discussions.

We have two events left in our schedule for this year. The first is our discussion group on Thursday, December 3rd at Wild Coffee (632 Yates St) where the topic will be the economics of value, price and profit. The discussion will be centered around a lecture given by Marx to the First International. If you are interested in reading it, here is the link:

https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1865/value-price-profit/index.htm

The second event is our end-of-year Marxmas Party, which is a fundraiser event for our group. Political discussion will be open and friendly as this is really more of an informal get together. Here is a link to the Facebook event:

https://www.facebook.com/events/1725878834313049/

We'll be starting regular discussion groups again in January, with a focus on basic Marxist ideas and works. The schedule will...

Paris Climate talks: Tracking Pledges, Equity and Canada

It’s that time of year again. I’m overwhelmed with glitzy pop renditions of holiday music while my email and facebook accounts explode with news of the UN climate negotiations. Held in Paris France this year, there are heightened expectations for a new global treaty.

New Brunswick chapter...

Our Fight for Survival

Andreas Malm

The climate negotiations entered their final day, and we geared up for our most audacious action. Several buses brought four hundred activists to different locations near the conference hall. Adrenaline running, we walked fast toward the gates and the guards. After a week of discussing sea level rise, eating vegan food, blocking car traffic, and marching in the streets dressed as polar bears and turtles, we were out to make a real difference. Chaining our bodies to the gates and each other, we tried to prevent the negotiators from leaving the hall until they had come up with a proper agreement, all the while chanting: "No more bla bla bla -- action now!"

That was twenty years ago,...

Violate human rights, get a $22M UN contract?

logo Take Action

G4S profits from Israel's brutal occupation of Palestine. So why is the UN giving them $22 million?

. TAKE ACTION . . .

Dear PAOV,

Waging violence is bad enough. Profiting from it? That’s even worse.

But that’s what G4S, a British “defense” conglomerate, does everyday. They run for-profit prisons and detention centers in occupied Palestine -- and with over 1800 Palestinian men, women, and children arrested in the last 2 months, business is booming.
