Can Canada walk its talk in Paris?

r1

Friends,

Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the United Nations climate change conference in Paris. As you can probably expect, he said a lot of great things.

It’s also true that Canada is starting off on the right foot with significant commitments for climate financing and investments in renewables on the table in Paris. But, while some signs are positive, Trudeau was noticeably silent about what his government plans to do about our fastest growing source of climate pollution -- the tar sands.

For close to a decade, Stephen Harper promised and failed to deliver climate regulations on the oil and gas industry. Now, Justin Trudeau is in Paris with Harper’s climate targets and refusing to address tar sands emissions.

It’s great to see a new approach to showing up at these meetings, but we need bold action and real change. That starts with recognizing that we need to keep fossil fuels, especially the...

COP21 Fossil Fuel Addiction:

A guide for intervention from the climate justice movement

Brad Hornick

Author's note: this article is meant to be both deadly serious and parody. It attempts humour and commits unforgiveable psychological reductionism of political issues. It is hoped the reader will discern the message behind the form of delivery.

Fossil Fuel Addiction is killing the planet. The Climate Justice Movement must ready for an intervention before this addiction kills us all. The following is a practical guide to recognize addictive behaviour as well as how to effectively intervene to assist in the Addict's recovery. In the middle of global climate marches and actions worldwide, climate justice activists would do well to study these tips for an informed intervention.

The earth's...

Fracking is a bridge to nowhere for B.C.

As world leaders meet in Paris this weekend, the recent terrorist shootings in the city will still be on the minds of most delegates. Yet it will have to take second place to another kind of crisis: climate change. The impact of extreme weather, droughts, floods, and rising temperatures on our ecosystems, our economies,...

I cant deny something big is happening

r1

Friends,

I just arrived in Paris for the global climate talks that start here today, and one of the first things I saw when I turned on my computer was the stream of photos coming from thousands of Global Climate March events across the globe.

What I saw was the beauty and power of a growing movement.

Melbourne hosted Australia's biggest climate action ever (60,000 people!), tens of thousands of Filipinos danced through Quezon City for climate justice, Egyptians ran and then marched through the streets of Cairo -- and so much more.

In total over 785,000 people marched this weekend, making it one of the biggest climate mobilizations ever in history.

There is obviously still a long fight ahead of us. But particularly after this weekend, it's becoming harder and harder to avoid the conclusion that we're close to something very big: a moment when the world can break...

Socialist Wins in Seattle -- Toronto Next?

Tim Heffernan

The headline in mic.com ran: "Meet the Most Important Socialist in America Not Named Bernie Sanders." It was about the impact of open Socialist, Kshama Sawant, who had just been reelected in a Seattle Council election. The article went on to say, "Sanders isn't the only socialist in the United States making a splash. Kshama Sawant, a member of Seattle's city council since her election in 2013, has a tiny fraction of the name recognition of Sanders. But she's quietly been making an impact that is arguably just as important, having led the charge for a $15 minimum wage in Seattle, which in turn sparked a national movement and has become a major litmus test for...

Korea: Major Government Crackdown Against Unions - ITUC OnLIne

Brussels, 21 November 2015 (ITUC OnLine) : The ITUC has condemned the Korean government's latest crackdown against trade unions, following a series of raids on union offices and the creation of a special task force to arrest KCTU President Han Sang-gyun who is currently under the protection of the Jogyesa Buddhist Temple in Seoul. Police swooped on the offices of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and its member unions today, confiscating computers, documents and other equipment, in an attempt to suppress ongoing protests against new labour laws which will push yet more workers into insecure jobs and reduce wages.

We're bringing this message to the floor of the U.N. climate talks next week:

r1

Friends,

World leaders and delegates from over 190 countries will descend on Paris this Monday to kick off the global climate talks.

When they do, we will meet them with a clear demand: keep at least 80% of fossil fuels underground and finance a just transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050.

That demand will be backed not just by science, but by a global movement that is stepping into the streets this weekend in over 2,000 places around the world as part of the Global Climate March.

And it will be hand-delivered onto the floor of the talks by the President of the Marshall Islands, one of the countries most at risk from rising seas (and fighting back hardest against them).

You can show that you stand with them, and with the global movement fighting through these difficult times:

Add your name to the petition here. I'll make sure it's on the floor of...
