Biden remains the consummate insider of the foreign policy establishment

This is no time to pull back from critical coverage of U.S. imperialism.

I’ve spent my whole journalistic career reporting on the horrors of U.S. militarism, including on the ground in places like Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, and Afghanistan. In the beginning, it was a pretty lonely beat.

Much of the establishment media was slow to seize on the rising tide of public anger over the forever wars. But Intercept readers championed our coverage of drone assassinations, civilian massacres, and mercenary profiteering.

That helped to fuel a dramatic shift in the terms of debate, and now President Joe Biden seems set to follow through on Donald Trump’s plan to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan. But the devil is in the details: There will still be contractors, U.S. airstrikes and covert CIA and special forces operations.

Make no mistake: Biden remains the consummate insider of...

We did it! A milestone for Indigenous rights and reconciliation

r1

This is a milestone for Indigenous rights and reconciliation!

Bill C-15 passed the final vote in Canada's Senate. This moment is the culmination of years of hard work. It took countless meetings to build relationships, strategize, and inform key decision makers. It took countless presentations, educational resources, and media interviews. It took tremendous efforts to counter misinformation and fear-mongering about Indigenous peoples' human rights.

So many people were a part of this victory. Everything that CFSC has contributed to making this happen could not have been done without our committed donors and volunteers. Thank you so...

A,

Sucking dry an already drought-stricken water table, illegally pumping and monopolizing water resources, an embezzlement probe, and now plastic and chemical pollution. Nestlé Waters is behind all of this.

Not surprised? We are not either, but just like the people of Vittel in France, we are shocked and appalled.

There are no less than 9 illegal dumps, some of which are more than 50 years old, scattered around the mineral water territory of Vittel and Contrexéville in Eastern France. That’s enough plastic and chemical waste to fill several dozens of Olympic swimming pools.

This pollution is denounced by brave locals. One of them, the farmer Didier Thouvenin, is...

SUPER-DUPER NON-COLONIAL PRESS CONFERENCE (a summary)

A Summary of a

SUPER-DUPER NON-COLONIAL PRESS CONFERENCE

On June 1, 2021, BC Premier “Lie and Log” Horgan held a bogus press conference to “address” forestry issues. He said “fibre”and “value-added” a lot and talked about how fancy the Old Growth Strategic Review is—even though it came out last year and it recommended a deferral on old growth logging, but old growth logging went up 43% instead. This time stuff is really gonna happen in 2023! Forests Minister Katrine Conroy is excited!

He did not directly talk about the forest protectors known as the “Fairy Creek Blockade” and the thousands of people in the streets supporting the blockaders until a reporter asked him how he would address protesters’ disappointment with his so-called plan.

He said, “the critical recommendation that's at play [from the Old Growth Strategic Review] at Fairy Creek is consulting with the title holders... in this instance the Pacheedaht... (and the Ditidaht and the Huwayut)... if we were to arbitrarily put deferrals in place there that would be a...

The dirtiest plastic on earth

Make plastic from coal: that’s the horrifying new plan from Adani Enterprises. It's an idea so controversial even other fossil fuel companies are alarmed.

But we can stop it IF we get Adani's biggest investor, Blackrock, to come out against the plan.

Tell Blackrock to speak up now!

A,

Even billionaire coal barons know that the era of coal-fired power is over. But they're refusing to just leave it in the ground.

So instead they've come up with a horrifying back-up plan: turn their unburnable coal into the dirtiest plastic on earth.

We’ve just found out that Adani Enterprises has submitted plans to build a $4bn plant to convert coal dug from its bitterly opposed Carmichael mine in Australia and turn it into toxic PVC plastic in India.

But we can stop this terrible plan before it ever gets...

Police in Rio de Janeiro are trying to interrogate our editor

Leandro has already promised that he won’t back down, and our legal team is helping him fight a summons to the police station for interrogation.

From its beginnings, The Intercept’s team in Brazil has reported on a culture of corruption and politicization in the Brazilian criminal justice system — which illegally conspired to imprison former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and paved the way for far-right President Jair Bolsonaro to take power.

Events there have now taken an alarming turn: In a naked attempt to suppress our journalism, a pro-Bolsonaro police official has initiated an investigation into The Intercept Brasil’s executive editor, Leandro Demori, for his reporting on police violence.

Leandro’s alleged offense was to raise questions about the involvement of a police division in a raid on a favela last month that killed at least 28 people — the deadliest...

Were committed to holding the Biden administration accountable

We have a big goal this month — because now is not the time to go to sleep and assume the “adults" are back in power.

We wanted to make sure you didn’t miss this important note from Intercept co-founder Jeremy Scahill and editor-in-chief Betsy Reed. Can you chip in to help reach our goal today?

CIA-trained death squads massacring children. Big Pharma putting profits over people’s lives in a pandemic. Police “kettling” protesters who dare to oppose their racist brutality. The U.S. government executing prisoners in death chambers largely hidden from public view. A new president with a 50-year record of promoting U.S. militarism and attacks on whistleblowers.

These are just some of the stories The Intercept has brought to readers in the past year. Week after week, people come to The Intercept to find stories they won’t...

Google Translate

PAOV — “If Google could find the resources for including Maori on its app, there is no reason to believe that it will have any difficulty in including Canada’s most widely spoken indigenous language on its app.” Google Translate supports over 100 languages but Cree, spoken by over 95,000 people in Canada, is not among them. Google Translate does not include many of the Indigenous languages spoken throughout Canada, blaming a lack of written translations. Petition starter Joseph is calling on Google to increase Indigenous language representation on its platforms. If you want to see more languages represented on Google, add your signature now.
