Western screech owls, listed as “threatened,” have been seen in the area. Petition starter Jessica is calling on the provincial government to stop all logging in the Fairy Creek old-growth forest to protect the at-risk owls and their habitat. Friends,
We are cancelling our planned emails today to take pause and acknowledge the heaviness of the moment that we are in.
Last Friday, the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation reported the discovery of a mass grave with the remains of 215 Indigenous children at a former residential school in Kamloops, BC. The Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation is working with experts to establish the causes and timings of deaths which are currently not known.
But here’s what we do know. These children were removed from their families by the federal government and forced to attend the Kamloops Indian Residential School. These children died while under the ‘care’ of the federal government and school staff. We know, as the Truth and Reconciliation Report released in 2015 has confirmed, that residential schools were “a systemic government-sponsored attempt to destroy Aboriginal cultures and languages and to assimilate Aboriginal peoples so that they no longer existed as distinct peoples.” We know that thousands of residential school survivors have confirmed experiencing emotional, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of school staff. We know the sad truth that these 215 children...

Support Bill C-230

Environmental racism remains a major issue in Canada. Finally, a law to tackle it is being debated in the House of Commons. Sign the petition to pressure MPs to vote in favour of Bill C-230. END ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM
– this is huge.
Canada’s first law on environmental racism has passed its first and second reading and is about to return to the House of Commons for its third and final vote.
Environmental racism refers to the fact that a disproportionate number of people in Canada who live in environmentally hazardous areas are members of an Indigenous or racialized community. Bill C-230 (The National Strategy to Redress Environmental Racism Act) highlights how decisions to place industrial plants and their waste streams, toxic dumps, oil and gas wells, and other environmental hazards in these communities are a result of racial discrimination.
If enough MPs vote in favour of passing Bill C-230 in its third reading, we could finally see real action from the government. But they won’t speak up unless they know a majority of Canadians are backing them.
Michael, will you show federal MPs there is huge public support for ending environmental racism...

We can stop this pipeline without a single blockade
The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is one of the largest funders of the dangerous Line 3 pipeline – and we have a plan to stop them. By running hard-hitting online ads in leading Canadian newspapers, we can pressure RBC to immediately drop their funding for this Indigenous-right denying and climate-wrecking pipeline.
Will you chip in to run ads like the one below in leading Canadian newspapers?
We want to get these ads up and running as soon as possible and so far, 123 people have chipped in — but we're still $570 short and running against the clock. Our deadline is midnight tonight. Will you chip in what you can now so we can launch these powerful ads next week?
DONATE NOWYou can bet that RBC doesn’t want anyone knowing it’s funding this destructive project, and these ads could push this Canadian bank to stop financing this dangerous pipeline for good.
With determination,

When you read this I might be in jail

This is the last stand for old growth in B.C.

As you read this, I am either on the old growth logging blockades on unceded Ditidaht and Pacheedaht territories on Vancouver Island, or I am in jail.
This won’t be the first time I have protested the logging of old growth rainforests on Vancouver Island. The first time was 27 years ago when as a young 23 year old, I spent many months living in a clearcut coordinating blockades with a local community group in Clayoquot Sound. I was arrested that summer of 1993. 27 years later, ancient giant trees are still falling and forest defenders are again facing arrest on unceded Ditidaht territory – also known as Fairy Creek and Caycuse.
This week independent scientists published maps of the critical old growth forests left in British Columbia that remain under threat and urgently need logging deferrals. The Fairy Creek and Caycuse watersheds are two of these areas. If the B.C. NDP had followed through with their election promise to implement the old growth panel recommendations, there would be no blockade. There would be no arrests.
So from wherever you are, will you help keep the pressure high...

The shipping industry’s loophole for dumping wastewater into the ocean needs to be closed. Demand bilateral action by the U.S. and Canada to ban scrubbers and protect the North American coast. SEND EMAIL
Oh, ship.
A few weeks ago the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) released a shocking new global report on ship pollution cheat devices, or scrubbers, and it’s clearly exposed the shipping industry’s sh*tty practices.
We know scrubbers dump toxic, acidic wastewater straight into the ocean, but how do we make the shipping industry stop when there’s little incentive for it to do so? I’m glad you asked

When the Trump administration announced last July that it was loosening decades-old restrictions on the sale of military drones to authoritarian regimes, Democrats were quick to protest.
But now the Biden administration looks poised to keep this policy in place, allowing the sale of drones to countries like the United Arab Emirates, which Democratic and Republican administrations alike had refused to sell to since the 1980s. And what do we hear?
Crickets.
Amnesty International has called out U.S. drone sales for risking “complicity in likely war crimes in Yemen,” where the UAE has fueled a decadelong bloody civil war that’s killed nearly a quarter million people.
It was easy for Democrats to speak out on this horrifying policy when President Donald Trump was to...

B.C. catches flak over rise in old-growth logging approvals

Clearcut old-growth forest in Caycuse Valley, B.C. Photo by Wilderness CommitteeDespite the B.C. government's stated commitment to protect old forests, old-growth logging approvals in British Columbia jumped 43 per cent in the last year, a new study based on provincial government data shows.
According to mapping research by the Wilderness Committee, logging was approved in 84,669 hectares of old-growth forest in 2020-21 compared to 59,228 hectares the year before.
Torrance Coste, national campaign director for the Wilderness Committee, says the increase in cutblock approvals is the result of a “fire sale” on old-growth forests announced by the B.C. government.
