Graphic of heatwave across Europe on the 4th of August 2022

A,

They’re calling it a "heat apocalypse" – Europe is literally melting, with roads and runways turning into warped globs of sticky, hot tar. The UK just suffered through its hottest day in history. Arctic permafrost is melting 43x faster than before.

This is not normal. Climate change is destroying our planet already – and yet somehow keeps accelerating.

But the worst offenders behind it – a rotten, predatory financial sector that has poured an unbelievable $4.6 trillion into fossil fuels since the Paris agreement – are flying completely under the radar.

We’re going to change that.

SumOfUs has a plan to build a crack team of campaigners and investigators to expose the financial industry’s responsibility for this emergency, then run massive campaigns in the media and with shareholders to force them to change. We’ll shine the spotlight on these giants like never before. It could be a turning point for the planet, but we can’t do it without your...

Will you donate $5 to help expose the dark money taking over our elections?

Republicans have nominated the most radical slate of candidates that we’ve ever seen in this November’s midterm elections.

Republicans have nominated the most radical slate of candidates that we’ve ever seen in this November’s midterm elections.

Donald Trump acolytes running on the politics of racial resentment and white grievance. January 6 insurrectionists running for secretary of state and other key offices that oversee federal elections. Anti-abortion zealots who have pledged bans without exceptions.

And with the election now less than 100 days away, we’re seeing a flood of dark money pouring into these campaigns to help put as many of these radicals in power as possible.

As November approaches, The Intercept’s team of investigative reporters will be digging deep to expose the ultra-wealthy donors behind these candidates — and the self-serving policies they want enacted in return for their money. But over the...

$58 raise

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Would an extra $58 a month cover your increased cost of living this year? That’s what Ontario Premier Doug Ford is proposing for hundreds of thousands in the province who rely on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). A 5% raise in ODSP rates was introduced in the provincial budget this week. Right now, single people who rely on ODSP receive a maximum of $1,169. A 5% increase is not enough to cover the skyrocketing cost of living. Petition starter Serene is calling for an urgent increase to ODSP. Show your support by signing the petition now.

Nowhere is safe in the climate emergency

Share these powerful climate stories with your friends and family. r1

Friends,

Hundreds of wildfires are raging across the country right now and Environment Canada has extended heat warnings for BC, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Ontario1. Out-of-control wildfires have spread across thousands of hectares in Newfoundland and Labrador, leading officials to declare a state of emergency2. The province hasn’t seen wildfires this bad in over 50 years. And on the west coast, where I live, wildfires in the Okanagan are displacing communities yet again.

No community has been left untouched. Yet our federal politicians would rather prop up Big Oil than take the necessary steps to stop the climate emergency from getting worse.

That is why people across the country are sharing their stories on our new website: Living Through Climate Disaster. It can feel hard to talk about your experience, but getting personal is a powerful way to shake people out of complacency and build pressure for bold climate action. Submit your story here.

As a young mother and farmer in the Okanagan, living through another year of unseasonably hot temperatures and wildfire threats is distressing. We cannot let this be our new normal. We deserve a world where our politicians do...

A Deep Dive into Cullen's Final Report

This is a test r1

Dear Friend,

When the Final Report of the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in British Columbia was released after a secure media lock-up on June 15, 2022, it did not take long for us to determine that many recommendations were very concerning.

We’ve now read all 1,804 pages – so that you don’t have to.

Upon reviewing the complete report, we can say that, overall, we are disappointed with the majority of Commissioner Cullen’s recommendations.

Read our analysis of the Final Report of the Cullen Commission.

The BCCLA was the only civil liberties association with full participant status in the commission where we advocated for human rights, privacy protections, and due process for people in BC. We are disappointed that the report calls for sweeping changes to tackle money laundering in the province that undermine constitutional rights instead of addressing the root causes of the problem.

Throughout the hearings, we spoke out against this type of tough-on-crime approach, which includes the introduction of unexplained wealth...

Dogwood News This Week: making history

Email Template r1 Dogwood Your place for news and action Last week’s Peace and Unity Summit set events in motion that could transform B.C. politics in a good way. The gathering of Indigenous leaders, hosted by Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs on Cas Yikh territory, offered a space for radical truth-telling about the moment we’re in.

Delegates rafted down the Wedzin Kwa past returning salmon, stopping at the mouth of Coastal GasLink’s enormous tunnel – big enough for three or four pipelines. They witnessed RCMP...

The bee-killing loophole

Hands holding dead bees

A,

Beekeepers are finding a carpet of dead bees where hives used to live – and it's about to get worse.

Bayer and Syngenta are using an “emergency” loophole in the law to try and dismantle the progress we've made on banning neonics in Europe. Fields are still soaking in banned bee-killing pesticides.

But we could close this bee-killing loophole and save the bees!

If we all come together and pitch in, we can create a mega legal fund that bee-defenders everywhere can access to sue against these fake “emergencies” — and force governments to enforce the ban.

This won’t be just one lawsuit – it could take many legal battles in several countries until Bayer and Syngenta give up...so we need to be ready.

Seal-killing bombs

Deadly underwater explosives used by salmon producers are killing seals.

Deadly underwater explosives used by Tasmania’s industrial salmon producers are blinding, bruising and killing fur seals.

A,

Protected fur seals are dying because of underwater bombs called seal crackers being detonated by industrial salmon producers in Tasmania, Australia.

Seal crackers are designed to emit piercing noises and flashes of light that reverberate through the ocean.

But they don't just scare seals: they also cause bone injuries, soft tissue burns, prolapsed eye balls and in some cases death, often from blunt force trauma.

Octopus farms

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Several countries have plans to begin commercial octopus farming within the next year. Farming carnivorous animals like octopuses places even more strain on the oceans because it means taking another species out of the ocean to feed them. There is no reliably humane way to slaughter octopuses on a commercial scale. Petition starter Karina is asking the government to ban commercial octopus farms in Canada, as well as the import of farmed octopus, so octopuses aren’t raised to simply die a painful death. If you agree with Karina, sign the petition now.

Ban octopus farming in Canada!

A, it’s time for a change and we want you to be part of it.

Click here to help choose SumOfUs’s new name!

When SumOfUs was founded 11 years ago, we were a small corporate accountability group mostly campaigning in the US. But over the years, we’ve grown to be a 20 million strong community, operating in 7 languages, and making impact in every corner of the world. Our charming math-pun name (“sum” means an amount of money in English) has served us tremendously over the years, but isn’t quite right anymore given our evolution.

This year alone, we’ve safeguarded billions of people from data exploitation, stopped the French government from investing hundreds of millions in Arctic gas and oil drilling, raised tens of thousands to support on-the-ground groups in Afghanistan amidst the Taliban takeover, forced the government of Brazil to halt legislation that would destroy the Amazon rainforest and harm Indigenous communities, and much more.

In short, we have evolved to be a truly global community, and it’s time for us to rebrand into something that represents both the power and diversity of our work.

Below is a link to view five naming options. The names have been created...
