Statement
This week, a tape was leaked in which Secretary of State Kerry warned that Israel could become an "apartheid state" if a two-state solution failed. Despite the fact that top Israeli officials have made similar statements for years, Kerry was immediately attacked by Israel lobby groups, and promptly retracted the statement.
The apparent end of the current round of peace talks is a reflection of the lopsided role that the U.S. has played in the talks. Our statement below, though written prior to Kerry's "apartheid" remark, is intended to help frame why Israel pulled out of talks, and what that means for the next phase of our work together.
Grateful to be working with you for a just peace for all people,

Effing Monsanto!

A bill is flying through the Canadian parliament that would further lock in Monsanto’s monopoly of our food system in Canada and around the world.
Can you make a monthly donation of $5 to help stop Monsanto?
About 15 thousand years ago, the world’s first farmer had the idea of saving the seeds from one year’s crop and planting them again next year. And that’s how farmers did it for thousands of years after that.
Until Monsanto.
Today, Monsanto is claiming patent rights over seeds -- the fundamental source of all plant life -- so it can charge farmers royalties for doing what people have done for thousands of years.
It's already charging millions in illegal royalties in Brazil. It's suing farmers in the U.S. And in India it's jacked up the cost of seeds so much that it’s contributing to an epidemic of suicides among bankrupt farmers.
The latest front in Monsanto’s war on farmers is Canada, where a bill is flying through parliament to give corporate agribusiness long-term patent rights over seeds. And if it win heres, Monsanto will use trade agreements to force other countries to abide by these patent claims as well.
Canadian farmers are fighting back, but they’re massively outgunned by Monsanto’s lobbyists and money. If they’re going to have any chance to stop this bill, they need our help to fight back. Can you chip in $5 a month to stop Monsanto’s attempt to monopolize food production in Canada and around the world?
Yes, I'll chip in $5 a month to help stop Monsanto from monopolizing our food system.
Breaking: We won huge changes on Elections Act

News is breaking of a major back-down by Prime Minister Harper over the controversial Elections Act, after weeks of sustained pressure, and growing outrage from Canadians and experts from across the political spectrum.
This is a huge step forward in our fight to defend our democratic rights, and has only been possible because of people like you speaking out and raising the alarm about this dangerous bill.
Here’s what we know so far about the announced changes:
- Vouching will still be allowed in order to prove address. (You need to have some form of ID that shows your name to vote, but this means much fewer students, retirees and First Nations will be prevented from voting by the new law.)
- The fundraising costs loophole will be closed. This measure would have disproportionately benefited the Conservative Party and opened the door for more big-money influence in elections.
- Elections Canada will appoint poll supervisors, not local partisans.
- Elections Canada will not be muzzled; it can continue to speak freely to the public.
There are also still major questions and concerns:
- By removing full vouching, some legitimate voters will be denied their right to vote, for example if they lose their ID. Experts have said this may be unconstitutional.
- Elections Canada is still banned from encouraging people to vote or trying to increase voter turnout.
- We don’t know yet if Voter Information Cards will be allowed as proof of ID.
- Vitally, the bill still does nothing to give Elections Canada the power to compel testimony, a power it has repeatedly asked for in order to investigate instances of major fraud like the robocall scandal in the last election.
This isn’t over yet. We’ll learn more in the coming days, and keep you updated.

Hey rabble readers!
This week we launched Revolution 101, our new series on movement building and strategies for social change -- it connects with activist movements and then gives you the tools to make change happen! In the first instalment, Meg Borthwick speaks with author and activist Steve D'Arcy about how social movements can use militant protest to strengthen democracy, and Steff Pinch presents tools that embrace confrontation as a catalyst for change. You can follow the series here.
On April 22 we celebrated 10 years of columns from rabble.ca president and political affairs columnist Duncan Cameron. To mark the occasion, we brought out his very first column from 2004 and assembled a collection of his favourites over the years. You can read a selection of them in...

You Have Information Rights
Dear PAOV,
Recent disclosures of spying against Canadian community organizations have sparked concern that involved citizens across the country have been spied on by CSIS and the RCMP.
At the BCCLA, we believe these actions are illegal and unconstitutional, so we've taken action .
But there is something that you can do for yourself. You have the right to access information about you that is being held by government bodies.
The Access to Information Act allows individuals and groups to access information held by federal government bodies, but preparing an Access to Information (ATI) request and the follow-up process can be confusing.
We're here to help.
With the help of Mike Larsen, who has literally written the book on Access to Information requests, we've prepared an online resource to walk you through the ATI process.
This guide was created to simplify the process and help people get useful and informative results from their ATI requests.
If you want to know what information Canada's government is keeping on you, find out! We hope you'll find this tool helpful. If you have any questions, reach us on twitter! Mike Larson will join us next Wednesday, April 30 from 12:00 - 1:00pm at #ATIP.

Stephen Harper is about to sign off on the world's biggest corporate power grab, the TPP.
But the talks are in trouble.
Can you tell Stephen Harper and his minister to stand up for Canadian democracy and to reject the TPP?
What do Google, Pfizer and Honda have it common? Uncovered lobbying documents show that they're pressuring the Harper government to sign off on the world's biggest corporate power grab, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
These corporations are trying to convince Harper the deal is a good deal for Canadians -- but what do they gain? The ability to sue the Canadian government for future laws around making more affordable generic drugs, internet freedoms, and emissions rules.
Harper is refusing to make the deal public, so while we're in the dark, 600 corporate lobbyists from companies like Google, Pfizer and Honda have the inside scoop. Leaks so far indicate this deal is bad news. That’s why Harper wants it to stay confidential -- if people actually knew what was in this secretive deal, they’d never agree to it.
Can you tell Stephen Harper to reject the TPP now and protect our democratic rights?
Experts say the TPP negotiations are being conducted with a level of secrecy never witnessed before in any previous trade agreement. The 29-chapter megapact covers everything from restricting internet freedoms to weakening environmental protections and making it illegal for farmers to save seeds. But that’s not the worst of it. One of the key parts of the deal is a system that will allow the world’s biggest companies -- like Google, Pfizer and Honda -- to overturn our democratically decided laws in secret and unaccountable courts.

Tell the Ontario Government, Human Rights Should Never Be Disabled.

With the stroke of a pen, my disabled sister's human right to decide where she lives was wrongly taken away.
In a heart-breaking move, Teresa who has Down syndrome, was forced against her will into an old-age nursing home, by the Toronto Central CCAC (Community Care Access Centre) and two of my siblings. Four days later, she was rescued by my 91-year old father who was "adamant" he did not want his daughter living in a nursing home. But then the nursing home called the police, in a shockingly callous and bizarre effort to force her back.
Teresa is demanding an apology from these two institutions, the CCAC and the Rekai Centre. This is a sorry mess. Her records show that the crisis list was manipulated to get Teresa to the very top, and placed in the nursing home. Her profile contained false information which made her appear to need 24/7 care. See the presentation I made with Teresa, to the Ontario Government's Select Committee:

The rainforest is being bulldozed for palm oil.
PepsiCo could help stop it right now -- and the pressure on it just got a lot more intense.
Demand PepsiCo adopt a responsible palm oil policy.
We can win big for the rainforest. And we can win quickly.
The biggest threat to the rainforest right now: palm oil plantations are clear-cutting the rainforest so they can expand. And the world’s largest global snack food company could help end that with one piece of paper.
PepsiCo buys staggering amounts of conflict palm oil every week. Unlike other companies (like Kellogg’s and Mars), it's okay with buying oil that comes from rainforest destruction. If PepsiCo committed to buying responsible palm oil, it could help reshape the entire global supply chain for the better.
The timing is perfect. Major companies like Kellogg’s have just adopted new palm oil commitments. And a hot new TV show just shined the media spotlight squarely on PepsiCo.
Tell PepsiCo: Commit to buying responsible, rainforest-healthy palm oil.
We all have a stake in stopping the destruction of the rainforest. Deforestation in Southeast Asia has made Indonesia the third largest carbon emitter on the planet. The orangutan, the Sumatran tiger, and countless other endangered species are being pushed the brink of extinction. Meanwhile, the remaining forests of Indonesia are storing as much carbon dioxide as the entire earth emits in a year, meaning that allowing the destruction to continue could detonate a carbon bomb.
Urgent: It's happening now behind our back

President Obama is holding secret meetings in Asia to ram through the TPP’s Internet censorship plan, which would force ISPs to monitor our Internet use, censor content, and remove entire websites. To fight back we need your help to project an attention-grabbing message on key buildings in Washington D.C. Tell decision-makers to stop the secretive TPP now so we can deliver the message before it’s too late.
Here’s the situation: Obama himself is in secretive meetings with key political figures and lobbyists in Asia to lock the Trans-Pacific Partnership’s Internet censorship plan into place.
We know from leaked documents that it will strip away your most basic privacy rights, exposing you and your family’s most sensitive private information.1 The TPP would even force ISPs to act as “Internet Police”, monitoring your Internet use, censoring content, and removing whole websites.2
It will give media conglomerates centralized control over what you can watch and share online.
This is huge: covering 40% of the global economy, the TPP is being called a legal “blueprint” for the rest of the world.[3] Once key leaders finalize TPP Internet censorship plans today it will be used to globalize censorship across the world. You will be affected and this may be our only chance to stop it.
Our attention-grabbing message will shine a light on their secret plan and will make clear to Washington lobbyists that the Internet community will never accept the TPP’s secrecy or censorship. The more who speak out, the larger our projection will become, and the more people we can reach.

Hey rabble readers!
Happy 13th birthday to us! Imagine: 13 years ago on the Internet, rabble was founded, to provide a counterbalance to the mainstream media and to tell the stories of Canadian social movements. Today, we need a progressive, independent media more than ever -- to gather together the voices, stories and analysis of Canadian social movements, and counter right-wing reframing of Canada. Can you donate $13 in honour of our birthday to keep rabble going? If a tiny fraction of our readers send us such a gift, it will be a great birthday indeed. Thank you for your part in rabble's history!

We received some important feedback from our wonderful overseas donors about the shift to CanadaHelps.org as our donation platform. It seemed that others may wish to know about it. We made the switch from PayPal for new donations for a couple of reasons. The main reason is that it assists us - as a small yet nimble non-profit - because it streamlines the back end of the donation process. CanadaHelps issues the tax receipts, and that is an enormous help to us. Also, it is less commercial and based in Canada.
H

We hope our regular supporters are not deterred by the shift to this new donation system. Please let us know if there is anything else you need to know or have any other concerns.
