Lets make 2020 the year of a Green New Deal

Dear Paov,
More than 25.5 million acres, a landmass the size of South Korea, has burned in the Australian bushfires.¹ And 36,000 people have been displaced by the devastating floods sweeping through Indonesia.2
We’re just a few weeks into the new year it’s clear: the climate crisis is here. It’s bad. And it demands urgent response.
With parliament resuming on Monday, let’s make sure our leaders hear this message loud and clear. Join us to call on every MP in the house to govern for a Green New Deal.
Climate disasters around the world are a reminder that it’s already too late to avoid the full force of the climate emergency. But scientists say we can avoid some of the worst catastrophes by cutting global carbon emissions in half within the next decade.
Canada’s nowhere close to achieving that mark. In the middle of this crisis, Canadian leaders are too busy pushing forward destructive pipelines, like Trans Mountain and Coastal Gas Link, that don’t have the consent of Indigenous Peoples. And they’re receiving proposals for...

The RCMP has everything it needs to enforce an injunction against the Wet’suwet’en people standing against a massive fracked gas pipeline -- and they are moving in to strike again.
Call Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Bennett to respect the rights of Indigenous people, and Wet’suwet’en law.
A,
Last week, Coastal Gaslink, a massive pipeline company, was granted an injunction to start construction on its fracked gas pipeline -- without the permission of the Wet'suwet'en people.
Yesterday, the RCMP set up an exclusion zone -- much like they did last year before they violently stormed Wet’suwet’en territory, breaking Wet’suwet’en law.
Unist'ot'en camp and Gidimt’en checkpoint are a testament to Indigenous strength, reclaiming their land and traditions to undo the horrendous damage of colonization and stand against extraction on their lands and waterways.
Now, the BC courts are siding with a massive gas corporation, in stark opposition to Canada’s commitment to honour the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and ignoring...

Take My Benefits -- Please!
Mark Dudzic
At the June 2019 House Ways and Means Committee Hearing on Medicare for All, Texas Republican Kevin Brady lamented, "That great healthcare plan that your union negotiated for you? It’s gone. Banned under Medicare for All."
A right-wing congressman with a 7 percent lifetime voting score from the AFL-CIO crying crocodile tears for great union healthcare plans can be easily dismissed as just another absurdity of the increasingly dysfunctional American political system. But when Joe "the workingman’s friend" Biden repeats the charge almost word for word and when AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka insists -- on Fox News no less! -- that "if there isn’t some way to have our plans integrated into the system, then we would not support [Medicare for All]," something is certainly happening out there. Talking points, after all, don’t just come out of thin air. They are carefully crafted and disseminated by a coterie of lobbyists and publicists often working on behalf of shadowy corporate and political interests.
Trumka was shortly joined...

Hey A,
I know you care about saving our forests, so I want to make sure you saw this.
Costco is wiping out the world’s largest forest to make toilet paper. If we don’t raise enough money today, we might miss our biggest chance to stop them before it’s too late.
Will you chip in to confront Costco investors in just a few days time?

Die Linke: Now What?
Three Suggestions for a Left Strategy Discussion
Mario Candeias
Society is being transformed. The party system is in a state of upheaval. Parties continually find themselves in troubled waters, and Die Linke (The Left Party) is no exception. The future itself has become uncertain. In which direction should the party -- and society as a whole -- move? This is what is at stake. In such a dynamic situation, what strategies will clearly demonstrate Die Linke’s value. How can the party become effective socially? There is no blueprint for any of this. Of course, not everything has to be re-invented; we can draw from many existing approaches. But what is needed is a critical, forward-looking discussion about these approaches that is grounded in solidarity. To this end, the party is going to organize a strategy conference. This contribution is intended to provide stimulus for a party sharpening its profile by producing selected and exemplary conflicts of connective and social-ecological class politics, by providing a socialist perspective, and by developing clear project...

While Australia’s bushfires rage on, Costco is happily bulldozing the world’s largest forest in Canada to make toilet paper.
In just a few days, Costco’s bosses want to show off profits to investors at its annual shareholder meeting. This is your chance to turn this meeting into a PR nightmare for the company.
Can you chip in to fly a campaigner to Costco’s investors’ meeting and stop the destruction of forests for toilet paper?

France at a Crossroads
Richard Greeman
The nationwide general strike in France, now entering its record seventh week, seems to be approaching its crisis point. Despite savage police repression, about a million people are in the streets protesting President Emmanuel Macron’s proposed neoliberal "reform" of France’s retirement system, established at the end of World War II and considered one of the best in the world. At bottom, what is at stake is a whole vision of what kind of society people want to live in -- one based on cold market calculation or one based on human solidarity -- and neither side shows any sign of willingness to compromise.
On one side, the Macron government has staked its legitimacy on pushing through this key "reform" intact as a matter of principle, however unpopular. On the other side stand the striking railroad and transit workers, who are bearing the brunt of this conflict and have already sacrificed thousands of Euros in lost pay since the strike began last December 5. After six weeks, they cannot...

In Case You Missed It
Record blazes: Australia’s devastating fires are set to keep burning into the coming weeks and months, despite some relief from lower temperatures this week. Over 10 million hectares have now burned. One climate scientist lamented, “It’s likely the forests won’t be coming back as we know them.”
Outrage continues over politicians’ failure to address the root causes of this climate disaster as they cling to coal. Reports show the Australian government buried response plans and even under-resourced firefighters in the months prior. This on top of years of climate inaction and ongoing commitments to expand the fossil fuel industry.

On Friday, January 11, 10,000 people joined a rally outside Sydney’s town hall in response to the fires....

Argentina: Facing Another Debt Crisis
Éric Toussaint
After four years of brutal neoliberal policies under Mauricio Macri as President, Argentina is again facing a major debt crisis.
Let us remember that when Macri started his mandate in December 2015 he accepted all the injunctions formulated by a New York magistrate, who had ruled in the favor of vulture funds against Argentina. This has made it possible for those investment funds specializing in repurchasing sovereign securities at cut prices to garner $4.6-billion, a 300% profit. To compensate these vulture funds, Mauricio Macri borrowed on the financial markets. He claimed that everything would be fine since implementing neoliberal policies would make Argentina more attractive to foreign investors and lenders. International mainstream media supported him. When invited to comment experts in economics presented Macri’s Argentina as a success story. Issuing in 2017 bonds that would come to maturity one hundred years later (2117), was hailed as the ultimate proof of Macri’s pro-market neoliberal success.
In fact, the success of those bonds had a completely different explanation:...

Will Boeing Survive as a Civilian Aircraft Maker in 2020?
Marshall Auerback
The dismissal of Dennis Muilenburg as CEO of Boeing might have looked like an early Christmas present to the employees and shareholders of Boeing, but the company’s disease has gone way past the point where any single corporate surgeon can save the patient. For those who bothered to look (and this evidently did not include the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)), Boeing’s increasing degeneration has been evident for decades, even as the stock price continued to rise, as a consequence of quirky accounting practices that masked the company’s deteriorating cash flow position. If the 737 Max 8 is killed off for good, it will create a huge existential risk for Boeing’s future as a viable civilian aviation manufacturer, as the company had projected revenues from its 737-related sales into its business plans for many years to come (it goes without saying that the Pentagon will keep the company afloat, with Boeing effectively operating as a military subdivision of the Department of Defense).
The...

Living Wages for Airport Workers?
Steven Tufts
The 2018 increase in Ontario’s hourly minimum wage to $14 was perhaps the most substantial victory for low-wage workers in decades, including workers at Pearson International Airport.
In a recent survey, it was found that 1 in 5 of the airport’s 50,000 workers earns minimum wage. The Fight for $15 and Fairness continues the struggle, confronting a Conservative government that cancelled the scheduled increase to $15 per hour and froze minimum wage for a decade when last in power.
It may be time to “rescale” approaches to raising minimum wages. The province is the primary regulator of labour standards, the exception being federally regulated industries, such as air transportation.
The Trudeau government is considering a new federal minimum wage, breaking with the tradition of matching provincial rates. Any increase that challenges the Doug Ford regime would be welcomed by federally regulated workers in Ontario. If the Conservatives do, however, take power federally we can predict how short-lived these gains may be.

We Should Be Free to Say ‘Fuck You’ to the Boss
Ingar Solty
A tweet by someone calling themselves "Tony Sopranime" recently went viral, going like this:
"Me when Bernie is president: Sorry can’t come into work too busy gaming.
My boss: That’s okay you may take a gaming sabbatical as the law allows.
Me: Fuck you.
My boss: I’m sorry sir."
Those of us who’ve had our fair share of shitty jobs (which is most jobs) know this feeling of wanting to say: Fuck you, boss. The tweet was funny because we have the same words on the tip of our tongue but don’t dare say them. But why not? After all, in modern societies, we all are equals, right? We have the same right to vote or be elected, the same right to speak, the same right to choose whichever job we want. This is capitalism, after all, not feudalism -- or the dark ages.
Of course, Marxists will say: well, your freedom actually ends at the shop, office, or...
