Dear Paov,

We’re so close to meeting our fundraising goal. Can you help us raise another $10,000 before midnight (PST) tonight so we can hit the ground running in the New Year? Your gift will be matched 100%!

Yes! Count me in!

The only way we are going to topple the fossil fuel industry is through big, bold, climate action. Anything you give will be put to use right away. Here are just a few of our plans for 2020:

  • Demanding ambition from our new government. We’re going to mobilize tens of thousands of people in support of Green New Deal policies.

Checking in

A,

Just before the year is out, I wanted to send you a quick note to ask whether you’re able to help close our budget shortfall before the year ends.

Together we’ve created real change in 2019, A. But there’s more work to do to build the world we want to see next year. So I wanted to take this chance to ask you to help out one more time this year.

You can make your year-end contribution here.

If you chip in a little now, it will go a long way to support people all over the globe to stand up to corporations and win the battles that matter to us all.

I know you really care about creating a fairer, more just and sustainable world. And if you can’t donate this time, we understand. We are a strong community of millions -- everyone does their part and donating money is just one of the ways you help win campaigns every day. We are deeply grateful for the support you give, whatever form it takes.

Thank you and all the best wishes for you and your dear ones.

Happy New Year,
Leila Deen
Programme Director

We need your support in 2020. r1

Dear Paov,

In 2019, we launched a bold people-powered movement for a made-in-Canada Green New Deal. In 2020, we’re taking this work to the next level.

But, Paov, none of this can happen without support from people like you. Will you make a contribution to push this work forward in 2020?

Here are just some of our plans for the new year:

  • Demanding bold climate action from our new government. Just days after the election, we got to work and called on all Members of Parliament to govern for a Green New Deal. In 2020, we’re going to put every MP’s climate commitments to the test. We’re going to mobilize tens of thousands of people in support of Green New Deal legislation. We will make sure that every MP feels the heat of our movement.
  • Creating a vision for a Green New Deal that works for absolutely everyone. We kicked off this process with hundreds of town halls earlier this year. Next year, we will continue working with our partners and supporters across the country to build a Green New Deal that ensures our communities thrive. And we’ll fight to make sure that our collective vision is...

Holding Pens for the Homeless

John Clarke

Homelessness is spinning out of control in many places, not least right here in Toronto. However, in California, the situation is now generating an acute political crisis. So great is the problem of mass destitution in that state that whole urban areas are facing a threat to public health and a level of social dislocation that undermines public order and the basic level of social stability needed for capitalism to conduct business. Trump’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is reporting an increase in the homeless population of California of 16.4% over the course of the last year and alarm bells are ringing the corridors of power. The human misery of destitution has now reached such levels that the cash registers are being affected.

When a hard right champion of the austerity agenda like HUD Secretary Ben Carson says that he wants to ensure homeless people "go to the places that are designed to help them get out of that situation," it is very necessary to...

COP-Out: The Military and Climate Change/Justice

Judith Deutsch

The world situation is much worse than generally acknowledged. This December, the coinciding meetings of NATO and of the climate change Conference of the Parties (COP25) were barely reported, much less analyzed, even though the delegates held the fate of humanity in their hands. To some degree, both meetings are secret, and their unelected delegates are not accountable to the public. COP has met far from the ‘maddening crowd’ ever since the large protests at Copenhagen COP15. NATO provides credibility, flexibility, and anonymity in equal doses and shields member states from legal and political accountability. NATO policy is not to reveal which member state participated in a military operation. NATO countries refuse to sign the nuclear ban treaty and now legitimize a nuclear weapons first strike. To judge by the results delegates in both organizations chose to ignore both science and the human situation.

The military is the single largest institutional emitter of greenhouse gases, but its emissions are exempt under the Kyoto Protocol, a convenient...

Hello A

Hi A -- there are just a couple of days left in 2019, and I still need your help.

Corporate bosses and their lobbyists aren’t planning New Year’s resolutions that save the bees, protect our orangutans from dirty palm oil, or challenge the spread of hate online.

That job’s on us: you and me.

And right now the best thing you can do to put people and planet before profit is to donate a few coins today.

We’ve still got a little further to go to meet our budget for 2020: we need to raise CA$63,100 by 31st December. So please can you chip in now to stop corporations trashing our lives and our planet?

A, you’ve done so much for people and the planet in 2019.

And that’s why I’ve got high hopes I can count on your help today.

We still need to raise CA$122,807 before December 31st to sustain our work fighting unchecked corporate power. A, if we don’t cover this gap, we’ll have to scale back the campaigns we win together.

Please can you chip in to put people and planet before profit in 2020?

The People of India Are Taking It to the Streets

The People of India Are Taking It to the Streets:
Challenging Modi’s Bigoted and Dishonest Government

Vijay Prashad

Every day and in every part of India, hundreds of thousands of people -- mainly young people -- gather on the streets to express their anger at the government. Their protests, like those of the protests in Chile, emerged out of one particular grievance but then have cascaded outward. They are angry at the government’s attempt to define citizenship in a narrow and bigoted way; but they are also angry at the arrogance of the government and at the disastrous way in which the government has managed the economy.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi comes from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a far-right political organization that has intimate roots to India’s fascist currents. The BJP’s parent party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), was born in 1925 with close links to Italian fascism. Both the BJP and the RSS believe in a doctrine known as Hindutva, which is essentially to promote the supremacy of Hindus over other...

The Case for Free Public Transit in Toronto

The Case for Free Public Transit in Toronto

Saron Gebresellassi, Matt Fodor

Free public transit is a growing movement around the world. According to the book Free Public Transit: And Why We Don’t Pay To Ride Elevators, there are 200 cities around the world with some form of fare-free transit, and 97 that are completely fare-free.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, implemented free transit in 2013, and it was adopted nationwide last year. Luxembourg is another country where transit is free. The idea has also gained traction in the United States. Kansas City is set to become the first major city in North America with free public transit. On December 5, their city council voted unanimously to eliminate bus fares.

Fare-free transit makes sense. Basic mobility is essential for all people for work, household tasks and broader participation in society. Transit should be accessible to all as a public service. After all, we don’t charge user fees for libraries, parks, schools and healthcare. Moreover, the urgency of the climate crisis demands bold action....

From the bottom of my heart: thank you.

Just look at all the things you’ve achieved this year: you got some of the most dangerous bee-killers and pesticides banned in Europe, you’ve made great strides to save orangutans and clean up the dirty palm oil industry, you’re lifting cocoa farmers and their families out of poverty, and you’re forcing tech corporations to combat hate on their platforms.

You and the millions of other SumOfUs members around the world make victories like these possible. Your work makes me feel so hopeful about what we can achieve together.

From all of us at SumOfUs, this one’s for you:

We Must Overcome Our Atomization to Beat Back Neoliberal Fascism

We Must Overcome Our Atomization to Beat Back Neoliberal Fascism

Henry A. Giroux

The recent impeachment hearings in the United States made clear that President Donald Trump abused his office and committed a crime against the Constitution. Not only did he attempt to pressure the Ukrainian government into investigating his presidential political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden in exchange for military aid, Trump also used the power of his administration to pressure loyal followers, such as Rudy Giuliani (his personal lawyer) to claim that Ukraine, not Russia, had intervened in the 2016 election -- a position completely debunked by every US government intelligence agency.

In addition, Trump once again displayed his disregard for the law and the separation of powers by refusing to cooperate with the House impeachment inquiry, claiming that the evidence pointing to his use of power to secure political favors from the Ukrainian government was fake news and amounted to nothing more than a witch hunt. Moreover, he escalated his contempt for the proceedings by conducting a smear...

My message to you

What a year it has been for Canada! r1

Dear Paov,

2020 is about to dawn, and 2020 is going to have to be the year. The year we see carbon emissions stop growing and start falling. The year we elect new leadership that understands the meaning of the word 'crisis’. The year we start taking on the big banks that are funding the climate crisis.

Sometimes that prospect makes me tired. This autumn marked the 30th anniversary of The End of Nature, my first book and also the first volume about climate change for a general audience, (back then we called it the greenhouse effect). So I've had plenty of time to fight and plenty of time to become discouraged. When I look at the melting Arctic or see the record-breaking flooding of Canada's rivers, I can lose heart.

But then I look at the movement we've all built together — a movement that is cooler and deeper with each passing year. This fall's climate strikes were a signal moment: millions in the streets, so many of them young people. Their commitment is astounding — but it's not okay to...
